California State University, Fresno invites applications for a tenure-track position in the Interior Design Program at the rank of Assistant Professor. The successful candidate will teach and develop an extensive research/professional agenda in at least two of the following areas: (a) professional business practices; (b) building environmental systems and integration, standards and codes; (c) material specifications and coordination; (d) project coordination, construction documentation, and administration; (e) lighting, daylighting, and sustainability; (f) Revit/BIM, Rhino and/or 3D Max. The successful candidate will participate in teaching beginning and advanced design studios, space planning, digital programs, graphic and rendering techniques, among other courses, as the need arises. Additionally, the successful candidate will be expected to produce a body of work that contributes substantially to the advancement of the program's mission and vision. Other responsibilities include advising undergraduate students, participating in program development and accreditation, rendering service to the University (at various levels), the profession, and/or the community. Specific assignments are dependent on departmental needs and the background of the individual.

Our Department: Since its foundation in 1970, the Interior Design Program at California State University, Fresno has been home to a diverse body of talented, ambitious, and creative students whose professional accomplishments are nationally and internationally recognized today. The program offers the undergraduate a Bachelor of Arts in Interior Design degree. The program is accredited by the Council for Interior Design Education (CIDA), and currently enrolls approximately 90 students. Central to the Program's mission is a commitment to design excellence that draws from the field's rich and complex body of knowledge. With a strong foundation in liberal arts and the humanities, the program's curriculum bridges theory with practice, extends the learning environment beyond the classroom, and promotes a culture of engagement and service-learning. A carefully designed sequence of studios lies at the core of the undergraduate curriculum. Students begin by learning the foundations of art/design, the principles of form making, and the methods of space construction. As they move to upper division studios, they explore the complex interaction of people, buildings and spaces, indoor and outdoor, at various scales, in different contexts and environments. Along the way, students develop and hone their competencies in programming, schematics, environmental systems and controls, building codes, construction documents and administration, computer-aided graphics and fabrication, visual communication, sustainable design and adaptive reuse, and human and environmental behavior.

Qualifications:

Required Education (from an accredited institution or foreign equivalent.):
  1. MA, MFA Interior Design.

Required Experience:
  1. Demonstrated commitment to working effectively with faculty, staff and students from diverse ethnic, cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds;
  2. Two years minimum of demonstrated record of professional work as an Interior Designer and teaching experience in at least two of the following areas: (a) healthcare design; (b) historic preservation; (c) furniture & product design; (d) materials, textiles and specifications;
  3. NCIDQ Certification or ability to achieve certification within two years of employment;
  4. Demonstrated ability to motivate students to think creatively and critically;
  5. Effective communication skills.

Preferred Experience:
  1. NCIDQ Certification;
  2. Two years of professional work experience in Interior Design in more than two of the four areas identified above, and/or in other fields of expertise, especially lighting design, building codes, and environmental systems;
  3. Two years of teaching experience at a CIDA accredited institution (Graduate Teaching Assistantship is acceptable);
  4. Experience with CIDA accreditation, site visits, and documentation;
  5. Evidence of productive research/scholarship in interior design, especially in the areas identified above;
  6. Demonstrated experience and success in interior design as a multidisciplinary field that is firmly grounded in the liberal arts and humanities, globally focused, socially engaged and committed to environmental stewardship and cultural diversity;
  7. Demonstrated record of acquiring grants and publicly/privately fundedscholarship, and;
  8. Working knowledge and experience using industry-standard design software, including Autodesk/AutoCAD/Revit/3D Max, Rhino and Adobe Suite.
