Applications are now being accepted for position of Assistant Professor, Biological Sciences, at San Diego Mesa College, beginning Fall 2018. Assignments may include some combination of day, evening, Saturday, and/or off-campus classes.

While the current vacancies exist at Mesa College, applicants should understand that they are subject to assignment at any district facility at the option of the Chancellor.

Major Responsibilities:
The incumbent reports to the Dean, School of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. The Assistant Professor, Biological Sciences will be expected to teach General Biology for non-majors. Additional responsibilities will include supervising and instructing students, maintaining office hours for student advisement and counseling, participating with other college faculty on academic committees, assisting in the development of curriculum and a willingness to take on leadership responsibilities in the department.

Qualifications:
Masters in any biological science OR bachelors in any biological science AND masters in biochemistry, biophysics, or marine science OR the equivalent. NOTE: All degrees and units used to satisfy minimum qualifications shall be from accredited institutions, unless otherwise specified.

Desired Qualifications:
Upper division and/or graduate credit coursework in ecology, natural history, or evolutionary biology Experience in field work relevant to teaching ecology Recent, college-level teaching in general biology, ecology, and/or natural history lecture and labs Subject matter mastery The ability to engage students A demonstrated working knowledge of learning theory Sensitivity to and an understanding of community college diversity, culture, and students Skills and experience to work in a cooperative manner with faculty, students, administrators, staff, and community groups Currency in the field through participation in ongoing professional development activities The ability to communicate clearly, effectively, and respectfully A willingness to participate in extracurricular activities at the departmental and/or college level

Pay Information:
Class 1, Step A Class 6, Step C ($5,754.92 $7,754.42) per month based on the current AFT COLLEGE Faculty Tenured-Tenured Track Monthly Salary Schedule.

Initial salary placement for this Assistant Professor is commensurate with required education and related teaching experience as outlined in section A2.1 of the AFT Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement and it is non-negotiable. The District offers a comprehensive fringe benefit package including employer paid medical, dental, vision plans, sick leave, and opportunities for professional development. This position is FLSA Exempt and may not accrue overtime. Benefits will be provided under the terms of the AFT-Guild, Local 1931 Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement. Annual Salaries will be recalculated for service less than a full academic year based on Education Code 87815, any required adjustment will be made with-in the first pay period. Travel reimbursement for interviewees traveling more than 200 miles, one-way, may be paid according to geographic location (see SDCCD Travel Stipend Policy, Rev 7/14/2011). Typically, Assistant Professors earn tenure after 4 years and promote to Associate Professor.
