Position Summary:
This position that reports to the Dean of the College of Letters, Arts and Sciences (CLAS) who, in turn, reports to the Provost/Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs. This position works in conjunction with the other CLAS Associate Deans as well as the CLAS Dean to realize the vision, mission, and goals of the College. This position will be responsible for personnel, Chair support, academic advising coordination, student support and academic success, professional development and grant support for faculty, and maintaining University initiatives as needed for CLAS. CLAS serves, supports, and oversees 19 academic units.

Duties/Responsibilities:
Assumes the role of acting Dean in the absence or in the event the Dean cannot perform the Deans duties. Works closely with the Dean and CLAS Chairs, Faculty, and Staff to realize the vision, the mission, and the goals of the College. Helps shape the direction of the College of Letters, Arts and Sciences by collaborating with the Dean in all phases of personnel, resource planning, fundraising vision and academic priorities.
(35%) Personnel Decision making authority that includes responsibility for faculty hiring, promotion and departmental oversight
Review faculty portfolios and prepare evaluation letters (Retention, Tenure, and Promotion (RPT), Post Tenure Review (PTR), Emeritus recommendations, Category II faculty retention and promotion, and Sabbatical Leave recommendations)
Monitor and oversee issues and concerns related to faculty and staff in assigned departments including mediating and resolving faculty conflicts
Full-time faculty hiring, which includes approving updated job descriptions, interviewing faculty, serving as a hiring authority when appropriate, keeping complete hiring records of positions assigned to programs, and approving salary supplements
Offer recommendations regarding new and reallocation of lines, including faculty and staff
Work with departments on improving recruitment and retention of faculty and staff identified as members of protected classes by coordinating or chairing search committees
(20%) Chair support Effective and inclusive leadership in a collaborative environment that supports and nurtures creativity, transparency and excellence
Mentor, train, and provide support for Department Chairs and Directors
Provide course scheduling, rooming, and course enrollment guidance and recommendations for Chairs and Directors
Administer CLAS specific retention initiative goals and strategies
Review of annual reports, program review, and budget requests
Assist with personnel and student conflict issues
Offer guidance when preparing annual reports, program review, and budget requests
Assist departments in initiating aspects for their strategic plan in conjunction with the College and Universitys plan
Afford problem-solving support when unexpected issues arise such as conflict de-escalation
Provide input and guidance with respect to University policies and procedures
Provide technological support for Degree Exceptions, Digital Measures, Data Warehouse, Internet Native Banner, PeopleAdmin, Ad Astra, SSC Navigate, etc.
(20%) Academic advising coordination Assist with the supervision and organization of the CLAS Department advisors
Attend bi-weekly meetings to discuss advising and retention initiatives
Review University-wide communication campaigns
Support participation in advising events (e.g., multiple SOAR (Student Orientation and Registration) sessions, registration events, graduation workshops, career fairs, etc.)
Provide support for advising tools and technology
Develop and help implement in collaboration with Chairs, faculty, relevant Student Affairs staff, and advisors CLAS specific retention initiative goals and strategies
Attend University Advising Council Meetings and Advising Leads meetings
Facilitate hiring new and replacement advisors and subsequent training
(15%) Student support and academic success Strengthen student recruitment and retention of first generation, underrepresented, and ethnic minority students
Assist students with processes and forms regarding tuition appeals, grade appeals, grievances, ADA concerns, complaints, and conflicts through walk-ins, scheduled appointments, email inquiries, and telephone calls
Make recommendations and/or decisions on retention or enrollment initiatives that support all students such as transfer credit, graduation requirements, degree progress reports, strategies for students to complete graduation requirements and departmental requirements in collaboration with relevant Student Affairs personnel as appropriate
Work with faculty on student issues and file the appropriate documentation to the Dean of Students
Process student forms such as grade changes, degree exceptions, late enrollment, overload exceptions, etc.
Educate faculty on student available students services that support the entire student life cycle
Serve on appropriate committees related to student support
(5%) Professional development and grant support Provide leadership in the area of faculty development and professional growth
Assist with the CLAS mini-grant program by managing and reviewing 50+ applications and final reports per year as well as maintaining oversight of the program budget
Assist faculty in developing ideas for grants that meet with College and University priorities
Review CLAS grant proposals, help monitor grant and PI progress
Keep complete records of grant proposals and work with the Offices of Sponsored Research and Programs and Institutional Advancement to prepare and write grants that meet College priorities as requested
Provide letters of support to faculty pursuing grants
Assist faculty in developing ideas for grants that meet with College and University priorities
(5%) University initiatives and service Represent the college internally and externally with enthusiasm and confidence
Chair appropriate CLAS and University committees
Conduct data collection, analysis, and final report writing as needed
Attend Chair and Deans meetings
Attend Graduation ceremonies
Maintain currency in primary discipline
Supervise graduate students as needed
Other duties as assigned


Required Qualifications:
An earned doctorate from a regionally accredited university.
At least six years of full-time, tenure-track teaching experience at the college level with an established record of success as a teacher and scholar.
Experience in judgment, creativity and flexibility in problem-solving.
A proven track record of high regard for faculty and a leadership style that ensures the development of a high-performing, cohesive, collegial faculty.
Experience working with and sensitivity to the needs of a diverse urban student, faculty and staff population including (but not limited to) people of color, LBGTQIA individuals, students from low-income backgrounds, first-generation students, individuals with disabilities, undocumented students, non-traditional students, student veterans and English-language learners.


Preferred Qualifications:
Experience as a university/college-level department chair, assistant or associate dean, or dean; or related administrative experience.
One or more years of curriculum development and review experience.
Experience evaluating personnel at a higher education institution for more than one year.
A high level of competency with technology.
Ability to interpret and follow academic policies and procedures.
Experience with conflict resolution processes.
Familiarity with implementing best practices.
A track record of collaborative relationships both internal and external to the College
Excellent communication skills, interpersonal and negotiation skills, innovative, quick thinking, facilitation and goal oriented.
Experience working with and sensitivity to the needs of a diverse urban student, faculty and staff population including (but not limited to) people of color, LBGTQIA individuals, students from low-income backgrounds, first-generation students, individuals with disabilities, undocumented students, non-traditional students, student veterans and English-language learners.
