Position Information
Under the direction of the Interim Lab Safety and Biosafety Programs Manager, the Chemical Hygiene Officer/Lab Safety Supervisor (CHO/Lab Safety Supervisor) will oversee the prevention and/or mitigation of occupational injuries or illnesses from chemical and other risk factors in the laboratory environment. The CHO/Lab Safety Supervisor will develop and maintain a comprehensive campus chemical safety program that will include a variety of complex administrative and technical health and safety components. As the campus expert on Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), the CHO/Lab Safety Supervisor will review and provide direct consultation on specialty SOPs. The CHO/Lab Safety Supervisor will develop, coordinate and review inspections (or audits) of laboratory facilities, monitor required documentation and behaviors and follow up on high risk laboratory inspections. The CHO/Lab Safety Supervisor will develop strategies and systems for compliance with federal and state laws relating to campus and laboratory safety and health. They will provide technical guidance in the development and implementation of the provisions of the Chemical Hygiene Plan in addition to developing the policies, practices, and procedures in coordination with other EH&S and the Research Integrated Safety Committee. As the direct supervisor for several employees, the CHO/Lab Safety Supervisor will promote and contribute to a successful team oriented work environment by maintaining a positive department environment.


Minimum Requirements
Working skills to respond appropriately, efficiently and effectively to emergencies and critical situations.
Working skills to organize, prioritize and complete projects within budget and time constraints.
Working written, verbal and interpersonal communications skills, including skills to interact successfully with widely diverse populations.
Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of EH&S technical requirements, logistics, materials and operations, rules, regulations, laws, etc.
Skills to effectively supervise subordinate staff in performance of highly regulated functions.
Thorough knowledge and skill in applying and interpreting applicable local, state, and federal regulations and related standards and guidelines.
Strong skill to appropriately use technology and relevant scientific equipment as required.
Working knowledge of and ability for decision making, reasoning, ability to develop original ideas to solve problems, and perform operations analysis, and quality control analysis.
Working knowledge and skill in effective interpersonal and work leadership skills to provide guidance to other personnel.
Ability to provide services in support of the mission of UCR and EH&S, maximizing customer service, excellence and continuous improvement.
Demonstrated skill in giving presentations and providing training.
