What You'll Do
Reporting to the Associate Director for Architecture & Engineering
  • Design
    • Design civil engineering projects, supervising professional and technical staff, or coordinating design with outside consultants to develop studies, bid documents, construction cost estimates, project budgets, design and construction schedules. Evaluate proposals from consultants and participate in the selection process. Coordinate project scope and budget with clients. Coordinate reviews and approvals within AEC and with affected U-M departments. Manage projects through AEC bid/award process.
  • Construction
    • Coordinate construction phase activities, including monitoring construction budget, project budget and schedule, contract administration, bid phase oversight and change management. Communicate and coordinate construction activities with all team members. Coordinate field inspections and testing. Make field decisions (with outside design engineer if one is involved) about plan intent, contractor requests, and unexpected field conditions. Revise/approve design changes, prepare change orders and authorize payments to consultants/contractors.
  • Collaborate between Architecture & Engineering, Campus Planning, and Construction Management departments for coordinating project scope, schedule, budget, staffing, funding sources, and impacts to other university projects.
  • Enforce basic applicable safety measures to support UM Environment, Health & Safety efforts. Verify all necessary local, state and federal reviews and inspections occur.
  • Coordinate with City and State on University projects within the ROW and related permits, assisting Architecture & Engineering with City interface.
  • Update civil engineering Design Standards, provide historical background on civil construction project and review legal description.
  • Attend professional training to keep up with industry standards.

Skills You Have
  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Four or more years of experience.
  • Progressively responsible experience in design, construction, and project management.
  • Some experience supervising a staff of professional design engineers.
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer preferred.
