Job Summary
The Communications Specialist will develop, implement, and oversee the Center for Vulnerable Populations (CVP) strategic communications components, including defining and refining communication goals, objectives, and priorities. Reporting to the CVP leadership team, the Communications Specialist will work collaboratively with faculty and staff to enhance and broaden the impact of CVP research, policy recommendations, and educational efforts. The Communications Specialist will also work closely with the CVP Program Manager as it relates to the website and other digital communication efforts. The individual will work within the guidelines and under the guidance of the UCSF Office of Communications, and will work within UCSF branding and communications standards, including UCSF digital, social media, and editorial policies. Additionally, they will manage, assess, and monitor effectiveness of the CVP digital communications (e-newsletter, social media – twitter account, blog, webinars, and website).The ideal candidate is able to develop a communications strategy for the Center and is self-motivated, results-oriented, flexible, and reliable. The candidate will play a key role in determining CVP's communication strategy and then in implementing it. This will include building a social media presence, engaging with media (including ethnic media), working with faculty and staff to pitch and write Op-Eds, creating public forums to increase engagement with the work of CVP members. The Communications Specialist will need to be skilled at distilling complex ideas, research findings, and policy positions into key messages, that will ultimately influence programs, policies, and perceptions.


The UCSF Center for Vulnerable Populations (CVP) at San Francisco General Hospital (ZSFG) carries out innovative research focused on increasing health equity. Founded in 2006, the CVP is located on the campus of SFGH. Beyond the local communities it serves, CVP is nationally and internationally known for its research to reduce health disparities, with special expertise in the social determinants of health, and inequities due to structural racism.



Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training

  • 3+ years of relevant communications experience

  • Knowledge of all aspects of communications, including strategic planning for various media venues, technical aspects and requirements of various venues, and most appropriate and effective applications.

  • Develop in-depth understanding of CVP, its achievements, mission, vision, goals, policies, practices, infrastructure, and a strong knowledge of current affairs

  • Solid skills to create, develop, and implement comprehensive long and short-term strategic communications plans

  • Knowledge and skills to advise and consult with management to ensure delivery of the desired message to the target and / or broad general audiences

  • Solid written, verbal, interpersonal communications, active listening and political acumen skills

  • Ability to write, edit, and distribute internal and external communications materials, including press releases, statements, quotes, talking points, social media posts, news summaries, and media advisories for organization\'s research and policy work

  • Ability to create and implement social media and communication plans for research findings, product rollouts, and other CVP messages

  • Ability to assess and monitor effectiveness of the CVP's digital communications (e-newsletter, social media, blog, webinars, and website)

  • Ability to understand and communicate research findings

  • Commitment to anti-racism





Preferred Qualifications

  • Linguistic fluency in Spanish or Cantonese

  • Contacts with media
