The Department of Theatre and Dance in the College of the Arts at California State University, Fullerton invites applications for a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor of Dance with appointment starting in Fall 2019. Department:
The Department of Theatre & Dance offers a Bachelor of Arts in Dance for students seeking a broad and rich background in both theory and practice. The program serves approximately 100 dance majors, with 4 full-time and 7 part-time faculty members. In addition, the dance program offers numerous general education experiences to thousands of CSUF students each semester. The dance curriculum includes intensive training in modern/contemporary dance, ballet, and dance composition; complemented by improvisation, dance history, kinesiology, dance pedagogy, and diverse performing experiences. The dance program is integrated with the theatre production program and produces two main-stage productions a year in addition to several smaller studio productions. The dance program actively participates with the American College Dance Festival and has been selected to perform in the Gala Concerts and received honors at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Cal State Fullerton Department of Theatre and Dance is fully accredited by National Association of Schools of Dance and the National Association of Schools of Theatre and is a member of University Resident Theater Association and United States Institute for Theatre Technology. Position:
The primary professional responsibilities of this instructional faculty member are: teaching all levels of ballet technique (beginning, intermediate, advanced) that is based on sound anatomical and wellness principles coupled with a value of diverse aesthetics and teach courses in dance history/criticism and/or K-12 dance education. These responsibilities generally include: participation in department, college, university, and system-wide committees, maintaining office hours, working collaboratively and productively with colleagues, and participation in traditional academic functions. The successful candidate will also be expected to contribute and collaborate regarding department curriculum, policy and practice, as well as pursue scholarly/creative and service activities. Other duties could include teaching dance composition, Pilates/dance conditioning, somatic practices, yoga, modern technique, and jazz technique, and choreographing for dance concerts, which is strongly encouraged but not required. Positive tenure and promotion decisions require the successful candidate to have excellent teaching skills coupled with substantial service to the department, college, university, and external community.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • MFA or PHD in Dance or related fields. ABD's may apply but must show evidence that the degree will be completed by the time of appointment.
  • Demonstrate professional experience in the dance field.
  • Evidence of effective teaching at a university level in both technique classes and theory classes.
  • Proficient in teaching dance history/criticism or K-12 dance education or both.
  • Strong evidence of successful research in areas listed in position description above.
  • Demonstrate ability to work with a wide range of culturally diverse students, faculty, and staff and ability to collaborate as a member of a team.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Record of published peer-reviewed research/scholarship in national/international journals.
  • History of teaching in a K-12 education program with a single subject credential in dance
  • Record of creating and implementing a K-12 curricula for dance credentialing
  • Participation ACDA, National Dance Education Organization, and/or National Association of Schools of Dance

Rank & Salary:
This position is at the rank of Assistant Professor, tenure-track. Salary is competitive and commensurate to rank, experience and qualifications. Periodic salary adjustments are enacted by the state legislature. Moving expenses, start-up funds, and a reduced teaching load may be available.
