Position Summary:
The University of Idaho invites applications as well as nominations for the position of Chair of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering starting Fall 2019. This position requires a strong commitment to department administration as well as support for ongoing teaching, research, and outreach. The Chair is responsible for interpreting university and college objectives and policies for departmental faculty and staff through effective, honest, and fair leadership. Expertise in engaging stakeholders in the formulation as well as the implementation of a compelling departmental vision/mission will be essential.
The general responsibility for the Chair includes: promoting effective leadership of personnel and management of departmental resources; providing leadership in the development and implementation of department plans and policies; providing for open communication with faculty and staff; fostering excellence in teaching, scholarship, and outreach (for faculty, students, and staff); assisting higher administration in the assignment and in the evaluation of departmental faculty and staff; participating in university accreditation and ABET program assessment processes; effectively representing all constituents of the department; serving as part of the college's leadership team and striving for the good of the college; and continuing personal professional development in areas of leadership.
Candidates will be expected to teach courses in their area of expertise, mentor graduate students, and participate in the research mission of the university.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Hold a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a closely related field.
- Demonstrated commitment to teaching, research, service, outreach, and leadership.
- Meet the qualifications for the rank of Associate or Full Professor in the department at the time of hire.
- Hold tenured status or meet the qualifications of tenured status at the time of hire.
- Hold a Professional Engineer License or become licensed in Idaho within 5 years of hire.
- Have excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
- Demonstrated commitment to diversity and respect for other people.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Extensive experience in teamwork and effectively leading interdisciplinary groups.
- Experience with assessment and program accreditation.
- Passion for cultivating shared vision/mission surrounding departmental activities and initiatives.
