Position Summary:

Monmouth University is seeking applications for a Director of News & Public Affairs in the University Marketing and Communications department.

The candidate would be a member of a dynamic marketing and communications team that drives overall communication strategy and brand development. S/he is responsible for strategically and proactively raising the local, national and international profile and reputation of the University through earned media placements.

Primary responsibilities involve creating and executing the University's media strategy; developing and making targeted pitches in an effort to secure earned media; effectively and expeditiously responding to media inquiries; serving as a spokesperson for the University, as directed; and preparing and training senior leadership, faculty and students for media opportunities.

Required Degree, License or Certifications:
Bachelor's degree

Required Skills or Software:
Excellent interpersonal, organizational and communication skills, Must be able to treat confidential and sensitive information appropriately, Must be able to operate a variety of office equipment, Intermediate knowledge of MS Word 2013

Seven years of relevant public relations, communications or journalism experience. Direct experience working with the media and/or serving as a spokesperson for an organization.

Experience in issues management and crisis communications. Experience with and proficiency in writing in AP style. Strong writing skills that demonstrate versatility, speed, and accuracy.

Preferred Qualifications:
Masters degree. Understanding of key issues in higher education. Excellent communications and public relations skills. High level of discretion, judgment and professionalism; ability to interact and build relationships with a variety of constituents including media, senior leadership, faculty, administrators, students and alumnae. Keen interest in local, national, and world news coverage of major events and issues; discerning eye for developments and stories of interest to the media. Ability to produce high quality work under pressure. Demonstrated success managing multiple projects and competing priorities. Ability to work independently while functioning as part of a team. Knowledge of and interest in latest tools and trends in social media and multimedia. Ability to think creatively. Professional experience with the web, social media and content management systems. Experience in use of digital photography and video.
