USF's Change the World From Here Campaign has been transformative and the Director of Gift Planning plays an integral role in the campaign at an exciting time in the university's evolution. Reporting to the Associate Vice President of Development, the Director of Gift Planning will manage a staff of two. There are more than 1,000 identified campaign prospects rated $1M+ and more than 300 campaign prospects rated $5M+.

The Director of Gift Planning is responsible for securing legacy gifts to the University of San Francisco and stewarding long-term funding relationships. The Director secures gifts from a portfolio of assigned prospects, collaborates with other gift officers to secure new legacy commitments and/or current gifts of complex assets, and manages staff assigned to gift planning to build the pipeline of future support and raise awareness of legacy giving within the USF community. Recognizing the importance of legacy giving and the procurement of non-cash assets in meeting campaign goals, the Director participates in principal gift strategies and demonstrates leadership in securing resources for USF fundraising priorities.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Director of Gift Planning leads a fundraising team focused on promoting and securing legacy gifts, collaborates with other gift officers at the University, and participates in principal gift strategies.

The Director of Gift Planning will be tasked with growing a program rooted in the best practices in the field and utilize expertise to:

  • Manage and develop the gift planning team.
  • Identify, cultivate and solicit deferred giving prospects among USF's pool of prospective donors.
  • Develop and implement a marketing plan to identify a continuing stream of legacy prospects through mailings, seminars, referrals, and alumni relations.
  • Manage 100-150 prospects, with 8-10 prospect visits minimum monthly with the goal for the team of confirming 30 or more planned gifts per year.
  • Work closely with legal and financial professionals in designing and executing planned giving instruments.
  • Utilize personal expertise and familiarity with deferred giving vehicles to discuss estate planning challenges with prospects and propose strategies for addressing these challenges.
  • Be thoroughly knowledgeable on all deferred giving vehicles and regularly update knowledge through professional development seminars. Develop and maintain current understanding of relevant tax, probate, trust and financial/estate planning information and of the University's programs, plans and staff members.
  • As a prospect manager, prepare and implement plans for all assigned prospects, involve lead contacts, submit contact reports in a timely manner and attend prospect manager meetings.
  • Provide briefing materials and conduct briefings for President, Chancellor, Vice Presidents, Deans, volunteers and other key players in leadership and principal gift solicitations which involve legacy commitments and/or current gifts of complex assets.
  • Provide advice on solicitation strategies, especially related to tax and estate planning benefits, to all major gift officers.
  • Provide training to staff and volunteer gift officers, alumni engagement, and allied partners, as requested.
  • Work collaboratively with Development colleagues on projects such as supporting other gift officers in legacy gift solicitations, donor recognition, donor stewardship, legacy gift marketing and special events.
    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  • Familiarity with the University of San Francisco and alignment with its stated mission.
  • Requires Bachelor's degree. JD or Masters Degree preferred.
  • Over five years experience and demonstrated success in prospect identification, relationship building, strategizing and solicitation of planned gifts, with particular emphasis on planned gift development or similar experience in working with high net worth individuals in private banking, financial services, financial planning, or related professions.
  • Ability to clearly articulate the fundraising priorities of the University in supporting the mission of USF.
  • Self-starter in developing prospect leads and pursuing gift plans for prospective donors. This should include an ability to move easily between major gifts and planned giving.
  • Strong knowledge of and familiarity with Bay Area philanthropic community.
  • Ability to write and speak clearly and effectively.
  • Proven ability to work autonomously and to handle multiple relationship situations simultaneously, and navigate through a complex and multi-level organization.
  • Evidenced ability to problem-solve imaginatively and creatively.
  • Must be willing and able to travel and have a valid California driver's license and car to travel to meetings and donor visits.
