Job Summary/Basic Function:
GENERAL FUNCTION:
The Energy Management Technician works under the direct supervision of the Energy Management Manager. The successful candidate will provide highly skilled technical support, and program analysis for the campus building automation systems. Responsibilities include installation and commissioning of new hardware points in existing equipment, alarm analysis and follow-up, troubleshooting network problems, and replacement of faulty components and devices. The candidate will use operator workstations, terminals, monitors, and computers to monitor the network and adjust set points as needed. He/she will operate/maintain control systems and devices, such as variable speed drives, laboratory environmental systems, chiller controls, and other systems. The candidate must perform complex troubleshooting and technical work on a journeyman level in the installation, operation, maintenance and repair of sophisticated automatic electronic, electrical, and pneumatic control systems equipment that operate heating, ventilation, air conditioning and other utility and environmental control systems. The candidate will coordinate with other skilled crafts in troubleshooting faults and malfunctions of related equipment as required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Helps assure that HVAC control systems operate in the intended manner to use energy efficiently by programming system parameters to meet objectives, adjusting set points, monitoring the network, and calibrating instrumentation, metering, valves, dampers, actuators, controllers as required. Diagnoses control problems and adjusts, calibrates or repairs as required.
2. Supports the use of control systems to meet energy saving and comfort objectives by assisting in the development and implementation of control software for microprocessor-based control systems and developing and implementing operator control interface screens and panels.
3. Performs journeyman level heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) work in the installation, operation, maintenance, modification, service and repair of electric, electronic, pneumatic, electro-magnetic mechanical control systems including high and low pressure refrigerant systems by inspecting and testing those systems to locate and diagnose faults and malfunctions, performing required repairs through replacement of inoperative parts or adjustment of thermostatic controls and blowers, and providing an estimate of repair (and/or replacement) costs beyond the capability to perform.
4. Ensures HVAC systems provide an appropriate living and working environment for the campus by troubleshooting, maintaining, repairing, and modifying secondary refrigerant systems including pumps, valves, cooling, air moving equipment and local temperature/pressure controls.
5. Promotes preventive maintenance as a strategy in maintaining electronic test equipment and mechanical tools by keeping accurate records on each piece of equipment indicating all required and performed maintenance, performing spot checks of equipment to determine their working condition. Coordinates and provides general oversight to contracted work force as required. Performs other essential duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Experience: An Associate Degree or completion of a formal technical training program within the field of electronics, HVAC, Process Operations, control systems or other related field is preferred. The combination of formal education and at least 6-years of experience may be accepted in lieu of a certified degree.

Skills: Candidate must have a working knowledge of microprocessor-based distribution control systems, analog controls, and pneumatic controls. The ability to interpret wiring diagrams, blueprints, and electrical schematics is required. The ability to use test equipment and small hand and power tools, such as drills, volt-ohmmeters, circuit testers, and manifold gauges, is required. Journeyman-level HVAC skills are required in maintenance and repair procedures, including preventative maintenance, breakdown repair, trouble-shooting, installation, and fabrication techniques.

Effort: Near visual acuity and depth perception, field of vision, and color vision within normal limits are required to make electrical connections and solder and splice electrical wiring. Must be able to lift and transport materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds on a frequent basis and up to 100 pounds on an occasional basis; prolonged standing and frequent bending, stooping, and reaching; and working in confined spaces. Requires a full range of physical motion to operate manual and electrically-powered tools and test equipment, to move throughout campus, including climbing stairs in all University buildings, and to work at heights. Work is performed indoors and outdoors, occasionally in environments that are dusty, noisy, or which may contain hazards. Some positions in this job classification are designated as essential employees who must report to work as scheduled when University offices are closed due to severe weather.

Other: The position requires exposure to, and use of chemicals, solvents, and cleaners common to HVAC work that may be hazardous and/or cause injury if specific instructions regarding their mixture, use, and disposal/storage are not properly followed. A valid Texas drivers license is required.
