JOB SUMMARY
The Executive Director of Dining Services provides leadership to enhance the campus community food services experience by overseeing a broad range of services including residential dining, catering, retail & concept food operations to support the diverse needs of UConn. The Executive Director leads the programmatic, operational, and financial administration of a multi-faceted, self-operated Dining Services program at the Storrs, Avery Point, and Law School campuses. The Director provides vision and leadership to ensure the delivery of high-quality dining programs with a focus on sustainability, customer service, facilities, and food management and provides value/convenience to students, faculty, staff, and guests. Under the direction of the Vice President for Student Affairs, the Executive Director of Dining Services ensures the effective and efficient management of the campus dining operation which consists of residential dining, catering, retail operations, centralized production, business, human resources, and marketing functions. The Executive Director is responsible for the management of staff in excess of 400 people, in unionized and non-unionized classifications, with a budget in excess of $70 million. The Executive Director maintains effective relationships with key community partners and stakeholders to advance and sustain the broad range of services. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Responsible for the overall success of the University dining program; provide leadership for staff in the development and management of strategic planning initiatives for the Department. Direct department staff to monitor and control budgetary expenditures, while maintaining compliance with health and safety regulations. Oversee the multifaceted campus food service operations which include residential dining, catering, retail and concept food operations, convenience, and the retail aspect of the University Dairy Bar, a student-managed farm, and ice cream and food truck. Monitor trends and changes in the campus dining industry to oversee the development of innovative programs that ensure growth and progress in these areas. Provide leadership to Dining Services and Catering employees, including hiring, evaluation, discipline, training, and promotion of all direct reports. Represent the Department in labor-related procedures for staff in state and unionized classifications. Manage contracts with external Certified Public Accounts and law firms on retainer to address labor issues. Oversee the facilities' maintenance and upkeep for all locations. Provide leadership in facilities and equipment management and long-range planning for the development of new/renovated dining facilities and equipment. Provide leadership and maintain compliance with approved sanitation and food handling procedures with a focus on sustainability initiatives including but not limited to waste studies, local purchasing, LEED-certified construction, and Green Restaurant certification. Develop, implement and manage food service concepts/operations at the Avery Point and Law School campuses. Provide excellent customer service to both internal and external constituents; use assessment methods to gather first-hand customer information and make improvements in products and services; establish and maintain effective relationships with customers. Lead the Department to ensure a focus on nutrition to provide healthy menu options and work to assist customers with unique dietary needs. Maintain open communication with students, faculty, and staff to ensure customer satisfaction. Provide consultation and assistance to the University leadership/community around issues related to food safety and other dining-related initiatives. Assist with emergency planning and review and crisis intervention activities. Serve as assigned chair and/or Student Affairs representative on various committees and ad hoc groups. Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in food services management or a related field.
  • Ten years of foodservice managerial experience showing progressive growth, both in size and scope of responsibilities.
  • Proven record of accomplishment in such areas as menu management, innovative residential and cash operations dining service programs.
  • Strong business, budget, marketing, facilities planning, and human resources management background.
  • Demonstrated understanding of and stated commitment to diversity, inclusion, and equity.
  • Demonstrated leadership and supervisory skills that foster teamwork and motivate staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective communication, both written and oral.
  • Demonstrated achievement in providing exceptional, innovative service.
  • Demonstrated use of advanced technology in foodservice management.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Master's degree.
  • Demonstrated experience integrating principles of diversity and inclusion into all aspects of management.
  • Related experience in a large, higher education environment.
  • Certification in sanitation and food safety.

APPOINTMENT TERMS

The salary of the Executive Director of Dining Services will be commensurate with experience within the range of $140,000 to $150,000. This position includes outstanding benefits, including employee and dependent tuition waivers at UConn, and a highly desirable work environment.
