Job Summary/Basic Function:
Job Summary: Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Student Engagement and Dean of Students, the Lamar University Executive Director leads and administers the total operation of the Setzer Student Center and Recreational Sports. This includes student involvement, student organizations, Greek Life, student government association, student activities, university programming board, fitness, intramurals, sport clubs cheer/dance, outdoor pursuits, aquatic, event planning, reservations and set-ups of activities on campus.

Essential Job Functions:
Responsible for the direction and determination of goals, objectives, and the means to achieve these goals by management of services, planning of budgets, direct supervision of staff and serving on various committees. Also including responsibilities for publications, reports, and working with students, alumni (ae), and the public on event planning/special events. This position serves as the primary and very visible communication link between student life and other campus departments and the community. The Executive Director will be located in the Setzer Student Center Administration office (Rm. 270)
  • Implements proactive and comprehensive short-term and long-term initiatives that are designed to strengthen student life programs, activities and events.
  • Demonstrates an understanding and knowledge of the role the college student union has on a university campus and how recreation activities contribute to health.
  • Manages annual budget and applies fiscal and budgetary planning techniques within financial constraints. Is responsible in managing the revenue from space reservations, and adherence to the requirements for all student club accounts.
  • Work in partnership with University Facilities Management in custodial, preventive maintenance, repairs and renovations for the Setzer Student Center and Recreational Sports and coordinates support with the Bookstore and Dining Services operations and services.
  • Provides direction and administrative support to over 175 student led organizations and 12 sport clubs, providing on-campus training programs to groups in areas such as recruitment, goal setting, ethical decision-making, budgeting, motivating members and programming development. Able to provide Myers-Briggs training to student groups.
  • Actively provides direction and support for the Cardinal Activities Board in the planning and development of co-curricular programs and activities for university wide programs/events. Supervises the administration of co-sponsorship funding for student organizations and sport clubs for leadership development.
  • Actively leads with Campus Groups company this summer to complete installation of new student/student organization communication portal (replacing orgsync) which will go live Fall 2020.
  • Provides direct advisement and support of a Greek Life system of 21chapters, four Greek Coordinating Councils and the Greek Council. Directly works closely with College Panhellenic Council on their recruitment requirements and procedures to ensure a smooth recruitment process for over 85 women in August. Designs with members the off-campus Greek retreat for leadership development. Work with two spirit groups; cheer and dance teams on their budgeting, recruitment and risk management processes.
  • Serves as primary Advisor to the Student Government Association, managing their budget, administering the election processes, yearly transition meeting, attending all Senate and House meetings and direct onsite support for their annual August SGA retreat and mid-year retreat.
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive marketing program to increase the engagement and participation of students in co-curricular and student life programs.
  • Establish operating policies and procedures consistent with University policies and regulation including state and federal law and Texas State University System rules on campus speakers, speech and assembly, student government, student organizations and student life activities. Articulates and demonstrates an understanding of the role, implications, opportunities and responsibilities each of these areas have on a university campus.
  • Implements and acts as the main contact with vendors, in terms of negotiation and commitments working collaboratively with the University Contract Administrator and Associate Vice President for Student Engagement, in the execution of the contractual agreements.
  • Coordinates the tailgating functions of student organizations for games, supervises Homecoming activities and prepares with Homecoming committee the game day parade with President's office.
  • Works closely with all center entities in building an inclusive campus community through social, cultural, educational programs and activities.
  • Directs a comprehensive reservation and space allocation processes for the Setzer Student Center and Recreational Sports and selected outdoor spaces, working with multiple constituencies including vendor/s approval.
  • Maintains and creates relationships with external entities including vendors/operations.

    Other duties may be assigned to this position on a regular or occasional basis to respond to needs of the university.


    Minimum Qualifications:
    Minimum Education Required: Masters degree in Education, College Student Personnel, Higher Education, or a related field.

    Minimum Experience Required: Eight years of related experience. Five years of supervisory experience as a student affairs professional. Adept at being a leader and a hands-on contributor. Demonstrates a strong understanding of student organizations, their role, and regulations governing them. Experience in managing budgets and strategically planning fiscal matters with revenue goals. Experience in recruiting, hiring, training, and managing employees. Able to effectively manage public relations and media inquiries on student life.

    Key Competencies: A demonstrated ability to lead and direct a medium size complex organization which provides co-curricular programs and services that are essential to the student, staff, faculty and community; an understanding of how the student union with student and recreational activities functions as a part of Student Affairs and the University atlarge. Demonstrates a broad and clear understanding of student development and the role of student affairs in the educational process.

    Physical Requirements:
    Must be able to remain in stationary position, often standing or sitting for prolonged periods.
    Must be able to have repetitive wrist/hand/finger movement to work on computer and/or related office equipment.
