We are currently expanding our staffing capacity for Learning Design and are looking for an Instructional Designer to join the team. In this role, you will work collaboratively with faculty subject matter experts to assist in the design of new online courses, support the revision and delivery of existing courses, and propose solutions for course delivery in online, face-to-face, and blended learning environments. This person will support faculty and course teams to incorporate instructional design theory, teaching and learning pedagogy, and best practices in online education.

The ideal candidate for this position will have experience partnering with faculty to provide learning design support. This person will ensure that course materials meet copyright and accessibility guidelines; will develop processes to manage and triage technical support inquiries and logistics; and will assist in the lecture capture, studio recordings, production, and administration of the College's online courses. This role requires one to possess strong time management skills while working on multiple projects, and work within a fast-paced, team environment to apply instructional design practice for credit and non-credit courses, certificates, and online degree programs that are aimed at unlocking new educational opportunities for the U-M community and learners around the world.

Responsibilities*
The University of Michigan is seeking an Intermediate Instructional Designer to join a creative team within the College of Engineering's new home for online and professional education. The person in this position will report to the Director of Online Learning Design and Innovation.

Design and development (80%)
  • Collaborate with faculty and instructional support teams to: deliver high-quality synchronous, asynchronous, online, and hybrid courses.
  • Assist in the development of new and revised courses and incorporate instructional design theory and best practices into course delivery.
  • Coordinate and operationalize technical and innovation solutions to course design and delivery challenges.
  • Assist in the review of courses, activities, and delivery tools to ensure they are appropriately aligned with learning objectives and desired course outcomes.
  • Provide feedback to program, course design, and production teams on consistency and appropriateness of course content and delivery.
  • Assist in assessment the efficacy of course design and delivery.

Project Management (15%)
  • Support course and program project timelines to ensure timely course development and delivery.
  • Assist in the support of faculty and course teams to ensure faculty have the necessary support to create, deliver, evaluate, and improve their courses.
  • Coordinate lecture capture, studio, and classroom technology management to support new and existing courses and programs.
  • Assist in the maintenance and support of design templates, checklists, guidelines, and best practices.

Professional Development (5%)
  • Contribute instructional design expertise by designing and delivering workshops for faculty and staff.
  • Support quality online course delivery and instructional design teams by exploring emerging technology and new solutions to learner and technological needs.

Required Qualifications*
  • Master's degree in education, instructional design, educational technology, or information science, and 3+ years of experience.
  • Experience assisting faculty and instructional support teams in the delivery and development of high-quality synchronous, asynchronous, online, and hybrid courses that place value on inclusion, accessibility, best practices, and scalability.
  • Experience operationalizing technical and innovative solutions for course design and delivery challenges.
  • Experience assisting faculty with learning design support, integrating media and open educational resources into courses, multimedia, simulations, videos, and application of technology for teaching and learning.
  • Experience revising course materials to meet copyright and accessibility guidelines
  • Experience using learning management systems and online education platforms (e.g., Canvas, Coursera, and edX).
  • emonstrated experience and interest in working in a team environment.
  • Demonstrated initiative, independent judgment, diplomacy, and service-oriented attitude.
  • Demonstrated organizational, interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.

  • Master's degree in education, instructional design, educational technology, or information science, and 5+ years of experience.
  • Skills in visual communication and user experience design.
  • Skills with web-based interactives and learning tools interoperability
  • Skills in reviewing third party tools for accessible design.
  • Interest in exploring how technology and design practices can be used to transform education.
