Metallurgy Instructor
(part-time, contract position)
at MiraCosta College Technology Career Institute (Carlsbad, CA)

POSITION DETAILS:
The Community Education and Workforce Development Department at MiraCosta College is looking for an expert in the field of Metallurgy to teach a small cohort of students in the areas listed below. This position requires a total of 95 instructional hours for a limited contractual time period, with work hours during the week-days, and beginning as soon as possible.

This course introduces students to the study of the physical, mechanical, and chemical properties of ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Specific topics include:

Descriptions of high-temperature metallurgical processes
Thermodynamic aspects of metals processing
Phase diagrams, phase transformations, and the prediction of metal properties
Measurement and estimation of physical properties of metals at high temperatures
Transport phenomena and metals properties
Interfacial phenomena, metals processing and properties
The kinetics of metallurgical reactions

This program is a short course (non-credit) that will have a rigorous curriculum with an accelerated pace to assist students as part of an apprenticeship program.

COMPENSATION:
Salary is negotiable from $50 - $90 per hour. Short-term, temporary employees may be eligible for Healthy Families Sick Leave, and enrollment in a retirement system.

WORK LOCATION:
MiraCosta College Technology Career Institute in Carlsbad, California. This MiraCosta College site is a state-of-the-art work skills training facility housing many accelerated training programs in Engineering, Advanced Manufacturing, Healthcare, and Emerging Technologies.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
Under the direction of the Executive Director of Community Education and Workforce Development:
Assist in the preparation of program curriculum design.
Establish an inclusive environment in the classroom.
Strive for excellence in teaching, applying best practices in field of discipline, and modeling behaviors that encourage student success and retention.
Demonstrate a sense of connection and responsibility for helping the College to achieve success through a commitment to its mission, vision, and values.
Communicate effectively, share vision, focus on people, initiate positive change, value differences, and foster collaboration.
Work with and inspire others to achieve college, department, and individual success. Proactively identify/address problems.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
A minimum of ten (10) years of experience in metal working and/or aerospace metallurgy with an expert knowledge of metallurgy.
Associate's degree in Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electro-Mechanical Engineering, or related field.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or related field.
Two (2) years of teaching experience.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:
Operation experience with metals or expertise in metallurgy.
Possess excellent written and oral communication skills.
Ability to work as part of a team.
Experience in developing curriculum to be taught on this subject matter.
