Radiation Safety Specialist

Position Summary:
Under the direction of the Director of Environmental Health and Safety (Radiation Safety Officer), assist in managing the university's radiation safety program; provide training and technical assistance in the handling, use, storage, and characterization of radioactive materials and radiation-producing equipment; respond to emergencies involving radioactive and hazardous materials; and provide lab safety services.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education/Experience: Bachelors degree in health physics, chemistry, or related field.

One year of experience in handling or managing radioactive materials.

Preferred Qualifications:

Education/Experience: Masters degree or higher in health physics, chemistry, or related field; experience with a research institution radiation safety program.

Certified with the National Registry of Radiation Protection Technologists (NRRPT).

Good knowledge of: Scientific principles and practices related to health physics, radiation safety, radiation control, and the use of radioactive materials and radiation-producing equipment.

Demonstrated ability to: Compile and interpret technical data; interpret and apply laws and regulations, technical manuals, and reference materials; communicate effectively; operate a personal computer and software; speak effectively before groups; deal effectively with the diverse members of the university community.

Knowledge or experience with DOT (Department of Transportation) rules and regulations related to the transportation of radioactive materials; radioactive materials sampling techniques and equipment; knowledge of public education techniques; and techniques used in planning, composing, and editing informational and educational material.

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions:

Must be able to wear personal protective and respiratory protection equipment, including SCBAs; lift, carry, or otherwise move objects weighing approximately 50lbs.

Must be willing to respond to emergencies at any hour; work during evening hours and be on call during weekends; work with radioactive and hazardous materials; participate in a medical surveillance program; participate in specific training programs for the purpose of securing and maintaining pertinent certifications; and engage in minimal travel for the purpose of attending training classes and performing work-related tasks at different university facilities.

Must be able to maintain a valid drivers license and comply with university driving policy, and live within or relocate to within 15 miles of Moscow within six months of initial hire.
