Position Summary:
The Department of Plant Sciences at the University of Idaho seeks an Assistant or Associate Professor to fill its Idaho Barley Commission Endowed Professorship in Agronomy, eligible for tenure if filled at the Associate rank. The successful candidate will be expected to initiate and conduct innovative and comprehensive research (70%) and Extension (30%) programs emphasizing best management practices for sustainable irrigated and dryland barley production strategies within the existing cropping systems. This position is a 12-month tenure track position, and it is supported by a generous endowment from the Idaho Barley Commission (IBC). This position will be located at the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences (CALS) Aberdeen Research & Extension Center located in Aberdeen, Idaho.

Research and Extension programs will focus on basic and applied components of soil nutrient management for yield and end-use quality (malt, feed, and food), plant health and productivity, precision agriculture, and protection of soil and water quality. The successful candidate is expected to participate in team-directed research, working collaboratively with other faculty across the state and use industry input from the IBC for additional collaborations. Faculty collaborations may include those in the Department of Plant Sciences, other College and U of I departments, the U of I Center for Agriculture, Food and the Environment (CAF) and Extension educators throughout Idaho.

The successful candidate will establish a national reputation for excellence through publishing in refereed journals, presenting research seminars, participating in professional meetings, and acquiring competitive grant funding to support research and Extension programs, including graduate students, post-doctoral fellows and other staff. Participation in graduate student education and mentoring is required. Extension responsibilities include creating Extension publications and programs that involve commodity groups and other stakeholders producing barley in Idaho. The candidate will work with UI faculty members, extension educators, as well as industry and commodity groups to provide integrated Extension publications, including state and regional bulletins that address barley production and nutrient management issues. Technology transfer via programming, such as workshops, field days, and grower/industry conferences, is an expectation.

Minimum Qualifications:
Ph.D. in Plant Science, Agronomy, or Soil Science, Plant Physiology or related scientific discipline that demonstrates experience and interest in fundamental and applied cereal systems research.

Must have demonstrated record of quality and excellence in research and Extension to merit hire at Associate rank and award of tenure.

Demonstrated experience conducting field-based experiments in cereal cropping systems and/or soil nutrient management.

Experience creating and delivering presentations at scientific meetings and to Extension/ outreach audiences.

Demonstrated success in publishing research results in refereed scientific journals and in peer-reviewed publications.

Demonstrated success in securing external grant funding.

Preferred Qualifications:
Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively in multi-disciplinary research and Extension faculty teams.

Demonstrated ability to manage staff.

Experience writing Extension publications and popular press articles.

Demonstrated experience in determining best management practices and sustainable production systems for cereal crops.

Familiarity with implementation of precision agricultural technologies.

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions:
Be able to work outdoors in cold, temperate or hot weather; able to work in wet or dry weather conditions.

Be able to lift and/or otherwise move at least 50 pounds.

Be able to walk distances to inspect and work in fields.
