Job Summary

The Biosciences Group of the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute is seeking an outstanding Post Doctoral Research Fellow for a one-year, renewable appointment. The Biosciences Group conducts research on biomechanics, anthropometry, ergonomics, and human modeling, focusing on vehicle occupant safety and accommodation. We are seeking a post-doctoral scholar to participate in research related to motion sickness in passenger vehicles.

Motion sickness in road vehicles may become an increasingly important problem as automation transforms drivers into passengers. However, lack of a definitive etiology of motion sickness challenges the design of automated vehicles (AVs) to address and mitigate motion sickness susceptibility effectively. The quantification of motion sickness severity and identification of objective parameters is fundamental to informing future countermeasures.

The successful candidate will collaborate closely with UMTRI faculty and staff to analyze rich datasets gathered on closed test track (Mcity) and during on-road driving conditions. Continuous measures during in-vehicle protocols include: vehicle acceleration/geospatial information, head kinematics, physiological response (heart rate, galvanic skin response, skin temperature), video, and self-reported subjective data. Applications include the development of models that predict motion sickness onset and elucidate relationships among the factors contributing to motion sickness for the purpose of generating hypotheses and informing future countermeasures for AVs.

The successful candidate will: 1) conduct collaborative research, 2) author and co-author peer-reviewed publications and present findings at professional meetings; and 3) assist in supervision and training of undergraduate and graduate students. Desirable characteristics include: strong collaborative aptitude, excellent written and oral communication abilities, and excellent quantitative and analytical skills.

Required Qualifications*

The successful applicant will have a doctoral degree in mechanical, industrial or biomedical engineering, computer science, human factors, kinesiology or in a related area. A strong foundation in gathering, analyzing, and applying acceleration, kinematic, and physiological data for engineering applications, and robust scientific computing skills are required. The candidate will have a demonstrated record of individual initiative and originality in research, strong quantitative and analytical skills.
