Job Summary
We are seeking a full-time Research Laboratory Technician within the Department of Pharmacology at the University of Michigan Medical School. The ideal candidate will be highly motivated, organized, and capable of working independently in a competitive research laboratory setting. This position will provide an exciting opportunity for the candidate to train and work in the areas of neuroscience and pharmacology. The candidate will be expected to learn and implement new approaches to assess effects of human gene variants using mouse and cell culture models. Other duties will include laboratory & mouse colony maintenance.

Responsibilities*
  • Responsible for daily laboratory operations, including ordering/inventory, maintenance of OSEH compliance, preparing animal protocols, hazardous waste disposal, approval of time sheets and organization and maintenance of lab databases. May supervise temporary employees and students.
  • Responsible for the maintenance of animal breeding colonies and will serve has health contact for core animals.
  • Will assist in the development and design of research plans, conduct experiments in line with the plans, review progress, and evaluate results (with supervision from the PI). Will formulate research methods and suggest options for improving quality, identify potential problems, and recommend and implement solutions. Will conduct analysis of data, and interpret and implement research methodology (with supervision from the PI).
  • May act as liaison with other departments, divisions or organizations.
  • Will assist in preparation of research papers, manuscripts and/or progress reports.

Required Qualifications*
Associate level:
  • Associate's degree in Biology, Biochemistry, or a related discipline
  • Exposure to a research laboratory setting

Intermediate level:
  • Associate's degree in Biology, Biochemistry, or a related discipline
  • A minimum of 1 year of laboratory research experience
  • Experience working with mice (e.g., handling, isolating tissues etc.)

Senior level:
  • Bachelor's degree in a biomedically relevant field such as Pharmacology, Cellular & Molecular Biology, Neuroscience, Biochemistry, or a related discipline
  • A minimum of 2 years of laboratory research experience
  • Experience working with mice and maintaining a mouse colony

All levels:
  • Ability to analyze data and communicate findings
  • Capacity to work independently, manage time proficiently, and motivation to learn new techniques

In order to be considered for this position, the applicant must have met or will have met all the required qualifications prior to the start date of employment.?

Desired Qualifications*
  • Mammalian cell culture experience
  • Experience with immunofluorescence or flow cytometery
