Position Summary:
This temporary position in the laboratory of Dr. James Nagler, in conjunction with Dr. Andrew Pierce, involves field research support for studies on steelhead kelt reconditioning. This project involves capturing, transporting, holding, and feeding large post-spawning female adult steelhead, with the goal of increasing the number of fish which survive and spawn for a second time. Job duties will primarily be care for fish at Dworshak National Fish Hatchery (DNFH), including feeding, disease treatment, and mortality processing. The incumbent will maintain, repair, and clean equipment and fish holding facilities. The incumbent will collect, organize and enter data, maintain records, and prepare results. Fish care duties will require weekend work. As needed and as time permits, the incumbent will assist with fish sampling, assist with development of fish holding and sampling facilities and equipment, assist with laboratory tasks, assist with report preparation, and perform other duties. Some job duties may require the incumbent to report to work at the University of Idaho in Moscow. The incumbent will maintain positive working relationships and communication with project collaborators. This position will run from the date of hire until June 30th, 2020. The position is expected to continue after June 30th, 2020, but current funding is only through this date.

Minimum Qualifications:
Education: High school graduate. High school or college level training in fisheries biology or aquaculture, or 1 year of equivalent experience.

Experience: Must have fish handling experience in a professional setting, such as aquaculture, fisheries research, or commercial fishing.

Preferred Qualifications:
Education and Experience: Additional training in Fisheries, Biology, or a closely related field, or equivalent experience. Experience working with adult salmonids. Fish hatchery experience.

Knowledge of: Salmonid aquaculture, water quality monitoring, fish anesthesia techniques, fish measurement and tagging techniques, fish transport.

Experience with Microsoft Windows, Excel, and Access. Familiarity with computer-based fisheries data collection systems.

Ability and desire to:
1) Work with large live fish;
2) Organize, maintain, and repair equipment;
3) Handle fish food, including pellets and krill;
4) Handle, dissect, and collect data from mortalities;
5) Maintain accurate, clear, and organized records;
6) Work weekends;
7) Work independently;
8) Develop and maintain professional working relationships;
9) Comply with relevant regulations;
10) Assist with laboratory procedures after appropriate training.
11) Work with a diverse group of collaborators including Native American Tribal Fisheries scientists and technicians, USFWS personnel, University faculty, staff, and students, and State natural resource management personnel;
12) Work with stocks of wild steelhead listed under the Endangered Species Act;
13) Maintain a positive attitude while working with fish that experience a high rate of mortality;
14) Contribute to advancing scientific understanding of issues in the ecology and management of wild fish stocks.
