The Medical School is seeking a Senior Administrative Director for Medical School Administration who will lead, oversee, and collaborate to support a number of operational, cultural and strategic initiatives within the Medical School. The Senior Director has primary responsibilities in the areas of Medical School Administration Operations, Medical School Strategic Human Resources, and select major initiative oversight.

This position reports to the Executive Director of Administration & Chief Operating Officer for the Medical School with additional accountability to Michigan Medicine Human Resources.

Responsibilities*
OPERATIONAL ACCOUNTABILITY

CORE OPERATIONS

Partners with the leadership of Medical School Administration (MSA), which is comprised of nearly 25 operational units to develop processes and meet deadlines associated with organizational objectives and deliverables. Support the efforts of a talented group of professionals who will lead the execution of a number of these operational activities.

  • Support and develop key business processes across MSA including the merit program, employee engagement, and other strategic initiatives that may require staffing support and analysis. Provide support to team members executing various MSA operational processes including but not limited to external survey responses, flu shot, continuity of operations plans (COOP), medical school policies and procedures, and more.

  • Responsible for guiding efforts to improve operational efficiency across MSA and providing support to team members

  • Partner with the medical school finance team to support MSA-wide initiatives including budget, internal controls, and other strategic initiatives as they arise.

  • In consultation with HITS, support MSA-wide strategic information technology needs including oversight of a shared device/software budget, the device rationalization project, and other initiatives.

  • Lead efforts across MSA to support the alignment of unit strategies with the Medical School Strategic Plan.

COLLABORATION, CULTURE AND TALENT DEVELOPMENT

Lead efforts to continually develop and improve collaboration, culture, and talent development across all units within Medical School Administration. This involves developing and executing upon an engagement strategy for MSA unit leaders, supervisors, and front line staff, and supporting talent development and diversity, equity and inclusion efforts.

  • Lead monthly MSA leadership meetings and build a strong network of collaborative relationships.

  • Lead and deliver quarterly MSA staff onboarding sessions.

  • Leverage existing, and create new educational opportunities for supervisors across MSA (120+). Existing programs include performance evaluation training, behavioral based interviewing, finance training, and crucial conversations.

  • Develop all-staff talent development strategies, promote existing educational opportunities, and develop new as required.

  • Partner with a dedicated and passionate team of MSA DEI implementation leads to develop programming that benefits from an increased scale, and fosters creativity at the unit level. Provide centralized educational opportunities available to all MSA members.

  • Assess employee engagement across medical school administration and partner to develop strategies which will improve staff engagement.

MEDICAL SCHOOL PEOPLE STRATEGY

Partner with human resources to represent the medical school's needs on various people-related strategies, including the employee engagement survey, talent development and training strategy, succession planning, administrative staff leadership hiring, and administrative leadership talent development. Lead efforts to develop a people strategy for all staff within the medical school, in close collaboration with department, center, institute and medical school administration staff leaders.

  • Lead the strategy, research, and planning for a monthly medical school committee which convenes to advise on medical school-wide people strategy.

  • Partner with department, center, and institute leadership in the hiring processes of administrative leadership positions, leveraging best practices for inclusive hiring, and developing a broad understanding of the candidate pool.

  • Work across the medical school to develop a succession planning strategy in order to provide opportunities for emerging leaders and build a pipeline of leadership talent.

Lead efforts, in partnership with the Executive Director of Administration & Chief Operating Officer for the Medical School, to support the talent development and training of our administrative leaders.

Collaborates on Michigan Medicine priorities by providing individual input or serving on institutional initiatives

  • Represents medical school administration on various committees and subcommittees to bring perspective and input to improve overall processes and deliverables across Michigan Medicine.

  • Engage in variety of institutional strategic priorities aligned with our mission, vision, and values. Assist in developing plans, deliverables, and monitoring progress. Evaluate projects for alignment with the medical school strategic plan.

Required Qualifications*

  • MBA, MPH, or other related Master's degree, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • A minimum of 6 years of higher-level management experience with proven business acumen, preferably in an academic medical center.

  • Demonstrated ability to present and gain acceptance of ideas and proposals.

  • A track record of collaboration and accomplishment advancing initiatives with multiple stakeholders.

  • Proven ability to embrace and foster change at individual, organizational, and cultural levels.

  • Demonstrated strength in verbal and written communication.

  • Competency in organizational navigation and ability to deal effectively and persuasively with individuals of varying levels of institutional authority in a complex and dynamic organization.

  • Demonstrated poise, tact, diplomacy, and integrity.

Background Screening
Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.
