Position Information:
Under the supervision of the Academic Advisor Supervisor of the College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences (CHASS), the incumbent is responsible for academic advising of undergraduate students in the CHASS majors, using the principles of developmental academic advising and knowledge of teaching and learning theory working to promote student development and academic success. The primary areas of responsibility include: advisement of potential and enrolled students; monitoring of each student's progress toward degree completion; informing students, academic advisors, faculty and staff members of the policies and procedures pertaining to undergraduate student affairs; referring students to appropriate support services; analyzing academic trends and working with other professional academic advisors and departments to meet student advising needs. Participates in the preparation and/or maintenance of descriptive materials for majors. Responsible for collaboration as reference regarding catalog copy, quarterly Schedule of Classes, and processes for undergraduate course revision and program changes. Responsible for representing CHASS at outreach and retention activities including recruitment, orientation, and advising events including, but not limited to Highlander Orientation, Academic Success Workshops, Discover/Welcome Days, and college fairs. The resulting distribution of job functions is approximately 80% academic advising, 15% academic advising support, and 5% other duties as assigned.

Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a service environment that is subject to frequent interruptions. Skill in setting priorities that accurately reflects the relative importance of job responsibilities.
Ability to effectively, professionally, and tactfully interact and communicate, both orally and in writing, with students, faculty, staff and visitors. Skill in independently composing letters, memos, reports, and other written communication materials using correct spelling, grammar, punctuation, composition, text editing, and proofreading skills.
Knowledge of characteristics of university students and an understanding of multicultural differences
Demonstrated computer proficiency using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel,Access) or other equivalent software, the internet, email messaging, and web-based software applications. Demonstrated experience using an online student information system. Advanced computer knowledge with the ability to understand and learn new on-line programs.
Ability to multi-task.
Strong written and verbal communication skills, including active listening.
Knowledge of department/school/college policies, procedures, and requirements.
Articulation skills to listen and advise/counsel diverse personalities using sound and mature judgment.
Ability to relate to individuals and groups of students using communication, counseling, and problem solving skills.
Abilities in problem identification, reasoning, ability to develop original ideas to solve problems.
Basic knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.
Knowledge of departmental/school/college courses and majors.
Ability to maintain strict confidentiality at all times. Knowledge of the applicable federal and state regulations governing areas related to the responsibilities of the position including the Federal Education Rights and PrivacyAct (FERPA).
Skills in judgment and decision-making, problem solving.


Preferred Qualifications:
Knowledge of the applicable University of California policies governing areas related to the responsibilities of the position. Ability to extract, compile, analyze, and present pertinent data effectively. Demonstrated experience with online Student Information Systems (SIS+). Thorough knowledge and understanding of regulations, policies, and procedures for the department of Philosophy, and College of Humanities,Arts and Social Sciences regarding departmental. major requirements, university and college requirements, admission, retention, termination and recruitment of students and of financial aid and other student service operations. Extensive and advanced knowledge of campus CRAMS program for preparation and completion of course proposals for Philosophy.

Counseling or advising experience at a 4 year institution.

Demonstrated experience with Student Information Systems such as Banner online system.

Experience updating web pages.
