Position Information:
The Department of Multicultural and Gender Studies at California State University, Chico, invites applications for the position of Visiting Professor of American Indian Studies. The position is a full-time, one-year non-renewable appointment.

Minimum Education and Experience:
The minimum education requirement for appointment to this position is a Ph.D. or Ed.D. (discipline open), with a strong research and/or teaching focus in American Indian Studies. Candidates nearing completion of the doctorate may be considered; however, all requirements for conferral of the doctorate must be completed before August 21, 2019. Additionally, candidates must document (1) a strong focus on issues in contemporary Native American/American Indian tribes and/or communities; (2) evidence of cultural knowledge of and experience with American Indian people and tribes; (3) proven excellence in teaching at the undergraduate level; (4) demonstrated oral and written communication skills; (5) superior human relations skills; AND (6) potential for, and commitment to, professional activities and growth. The successful candidate should also demonstrate a commitment to and/or experience promoting and fostering a learning environment that is supportive of individuals from diverse backgrounds.

Additional Requirements and Responsibilities for this position:
Expectations include: pursuing research and/or creative activities; teaching a variety of courses in American Indian Studies (see table below) as well as in Multicultural & Gender Studies (including GE) through an intersectional lens; and service within and outside of MCGS (e.g. outreach, recruitment, retention, mentoring, and otherwise helping foster the success of students; student advising; curricular development, etc.). The successful candidate will work with other colleagues to build enrollment in our intersectional American Indian Studies program and otherwise move toward our Strategic Vision. The visiting faculty member would lead revision of core AIST curriculum to include a majority of Native American-authored texts; as well as develop new courses, including (1) American Indian Sovereignty, Federal Indian Law, and Politics and (2) Native American Tribal Governance: Economic Development, Culture, Housing, Health and Education.

Teaching assignments are based upon qualifications of the individual as well as the needs of the department and our students.

Recruitment Preferences:
Preference for knowledge of and/or established relationships (or strong potential for establishing relationships) with tribes in Northern California, especially the Mechoopda and/or Maidu; prior experience teaching with an intersectional lens and student-centered pedagogy; and experience in interdisciplinary teaching, curriculum development, program development, and/or student outreach and retention. Additional expertise is desired in one or more of the following areas: political, ethnic and cultural identities; indigenous feminisms; two-spirit peoples; multigenerational perspectives within tribal communities; and indigenous research methodology.

Eligibility for standard CSU benefits is based on an appointment of half-time or more for a period exceeding six months.
