About the Opportunity:
The Academic Advisor in the D'Amore-McKim School of Business provides student-centered support and guidance to undergraduate Business majors regarding college and university policies, course selection, pre-registration, registration, and co-op scheduling. The Advisor will provide support to enhance student engagement, academic progression and retention. The Advisor serves as a liaison between university administrators, students, parents, faculty, staff and others regarding students' academic success. This individual will be in frequent communication with offices across the University to support student success. The Advisor utilize a variety of university systems to advise the student. Due to the complex and sensitive issues that can arise, a high emphasis is placed on confidentiality and privacy. The Advisor needs to be familiar with and adhere to applicable guidelines laid out by ADA, FERPA , SEVIS and other state, federal University and College regulations. The average student caseload for advisors in the D'Amore-McKim School of Business is approximately 500+ students (shared among a team). The Undergraduate Programs Office, DMSB and Northeastern are fast-paced environments. The Advisor is expected to successfully manage student demand during high traffic times.
The Advisor will assist with new-students orientation sessions and participate in recruitments activities as needed. Supporting and facilitating events and workshops that contribute to the student experience is an expectation of the Academic Advisor. The Academic Advisor will be involved with special events hosted by the Undergraduate Programs Office. Work hours include some evenings and weekends.
Student Advising: Coordinates advising activities to ensure student progress and development. Works with students to set academic goals and update curriculum guides each term. Expresses interest and concern for individual students and provides information that is useful to guide the student's decision-making process according to the needs they articulate.
Customer Service: Helpful and responsive in providing complete and accurate customer service to students, the public, other University employees and parents when appropriate. Focuses on assessing, understanding, meeting and exceeding customer expectations.
Administrative: Maintain written documentation on all student contact by utilizing the appropriate documentation system. Reviews, analyzes and responds to various data reports to assure accuracy of student records. Addresses request for forms, letters and course approvals in a timely and accurate manner.
Communication: The academic advisor is responsible for developing and maintaining communication systems with assigned cohort through weekly update e-mails, individualized emails, campaigns, meetings, phone calls, and programming.
Master's degree required, preferably in counseling, human services or higher education (or equivalent experience advising in a college/university.) A minimum of 3 to 4 years of work or educational experience; preferably in higher education. Must enjoy working with students and helping guide them through their academics to graduation. Experience working with the following systems is a plus: Course catalog, Degree Audit Reporting System (DARS), Faculty Advisor Communication Tool (FACT), Banner, SalesForce, EAB Navigate, Self-Authored Integrated Learning (SAIL) platform.
