Job Description
The University of Tennessee Department of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) is seeking a Fire and Life Safety Technician for the Knoxville campus. This is an entry level position for a Fire Safety Technician. This person's primary responsibility will be monthly inspections of portable fire extinguishers in university buildings. This person will also work closely with other members of the Fire & Life Safety team to perform annual certifications, fire extinguisher inspections, fire drills, fire safety audits, fire awareness communication, and fire safety training events on campus. This person will also have other general duties as required.
Responsibilities
Fire Protection Systems Management
- Inspects, replaces or installs portable fire extinguisher equipment located on the UT Knoxville campus in accordance with NFPA 10 Standard for Portable Fire Extinguishers, International Fire Code, CGA pamphlet C-1 Methods of Hydrostatic Testing of Compressed Gas Cylinders and CFR 29 Part 1910.132-138 and Tennessee State Fire Marshal requirements.
- Tests emergency exit lighting, signs and doors to verify functionality and physical condition.
- Tests and maintains university Automated External Defibrillators (AED) per state regulations and the university AED Management Program.
- May be required to assist other UT campuses (UTIA and UTSI) with fire extinguisher inspection, testing & maintenance as needed.
- Prepares reports of equipment inspection, testing and maintenance (ITM) results to supervisor.
- Assists with overseeing fire extinguisher maintenance contractor while contractor is working on campus.
Inspections & Assessments
- Assists the Fire Protection Specialist with general fire and life safety inspections of campus buildings and facilities as needed.
- Assists the Laboratory Safety Services unit with verifying completion of laboratory safety corrective actions upon request and per documented inspection results and guidelines.
- Follows up on incidents involving a fire extinguisher discharge events and ensures used extinguishers are retrieved, replaced, serviced and returned to stock inventory.
- Assists with fire alarm drills for all university facilities.
Training & Delivery
- Delivers basic training on fire & life safety equipment and/or procedures either individually or as part of a training team.
- Training may involve use of training equipment to include, but not limited to: BullEx BullsEye and R.A.C.E. Station, fire alarm demonstrations using alarm equipment mock-ups, and audio visual equipment to display PowerPoint presentations and building information such as evacuation maps.
- Provide CPR/AED/BFA training through the EHS ASHI certified training center as assigned.
- Assists the EHS Department with public outreach events.
EHS Department Support
- Attends approved training activities for fire and life safety for increasing knowledge base and professional development.
- Attends approved training activities for Occupational Safety and Health Administration general industry and construction safety to broaden knowledge base for hazardous materials safety and fire codes.
- Contributes toward creating a positive and respectful workplace defined by personal and professional competence, integrity, and collaboration.
- Performs other duties in support of the broader EHS Department as assigned.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- Required to have a high diploma or GED and one year of work experience. Associates degree or equivalent course work hours may be substituted for work experience.
- Free of limitations which prevents extensive walking, climbing of stairs and fixed ladders on a daily basis is required for this position.
- The candidate must be capable of lifting/carrying containers weighing up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to work independently is important.
- Basic knowledge of MS word and excel.
- Valid TN Driver's license is required.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Vocational training, technical training, or verifiable on-the-job training.
- The successful candidates must pass a drug test and background check.
