Job Summary

The Information Security Officer (ISO) plays a tactical role in supporting the University's information security strategy through day-to-day implementation, awareness coordination, and risk mitigation activities. Reporting to the Chief Information Security Officer (CISO), the ISO is responsible for executing key cybersecurity initiatives, managing the security awareness program, responding to incidents, and conducting technical assessments to ensure the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of CSU's systems and data. This role focuses on tactical enforcement of policies, response coordination, and ongoing protection of institutional digital assets.

Responsibilities

Significant Duties & Responsibilities include: Act as a tactical lead in daily information security operations, focusing on threat identification, incident response, and vulnerability remediation.; Manage CSU's Information Security Awareness Program, including the development, deployment, and tracking of mandatory cybersecurity training and campus-wide campaigns such as Cybersecurity Awareness Month.; Investigate suspicious activities and conduct forensic analysis of security incidents to determine root cause and containment strategies.; Perform technical risk assessments of CSU systems, networks, and third-party applications to identify vulnerabilities and recommend corrective actions.; Audit access rights, terminated accounts, and local administrator usage; ensure alignment with CSU and USG security policies.; Monitor and manage campus firewall rule sets, endpoint security tools, and secure remote access configurations.; Maintain metrics dashboards and documentation related to VPN usage, laptop encryption, MFA status, and asset inventory.; Assist with tactical components of security-related IT projects (e.g., identity management, mobile device controls, endpoint protection).; Collaborate with IT and campus units to track and resolve internal/external audit findings and policy violations.
  • Support Business Continuity (BCP) and Disaster Recovery (DR) planning by maintaining relevant documentation and participating in walkthroughs and testing.; Provide timely security advisories and coordinate with the CISO to update or enforce institutional security policies and procedures.; Contribute to the development and enforcement of guidelines for the secure handling, storage, and disposal of sensitive data.; Perform other duties as assigned in support of CSU's cybersecurity objectives.

    Required Qualifications

    Required Qualifications include: Bachelor's degree in information technology, Cybersecurity, Computer Science, or a related discipline.; A minimum of three (3) years of experience in cybersecurity, IT audit, or security operations, preferably in a higher education setting.; Experience delivering or managing information security awareness programs is required.; Relevant industry certifications (e.g., CompTIA Security+, GIAC, or similar) must be obtained within 18 months of hire.; Strong technical understanding of IT environments including networks, endpoints, and cloud services.

    Proposed Salary

    The proposed annualized salary range for this position is $75,000 - 80,000 and includes full benefits.

    Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

    Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities include: Strong working knowledge of cybersecurity principles, tools, and standards (e.g., NIST 800-53, ISO 27001, CIS Controls).; Proficiency in managing security awareness platforms and creating engaging training content.; Technical ability to analyze logs, monitor threat indicators, and perform vulnerability assessments.; Familiarity with federal and state data protection regulations applicable to higher education (FERPA, GLBA, HIPAA, PCI-DSS).; Demonstrated ability to write clearly, create documentation, and communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.; Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and organizational skills; able to work independently with sound judgment.; Familiarity with security tools such as Microsoft Defender, ePO, Qualys, Zenworks, or comparable platforms.

    Conditions of Employment
