Distinguishing Characteristics
The Film and Television Program:
- The Film, Television, and Electronic Media program falls under the Fine Arts Department and is housed primarily in the Gavilan Television studio, which will be renovated this summer.
- The Film & Television program offers an Associates Degree for Transfer (ADT) in Film, Television, and Electronic Media as well as a Certificate of Achievement in Film, Television, and Electronic Media.
- With a dozen different film production and film appreciation courses, the Film & Television program has consistently robust enrollment and continues to grow.
- Through a hands-on teaching philosophy, our students learn by doing all the different jobs on set, creating news stories for the GAVTV News program, and participating in a summer feature-length film production.
- Film students have opportunities to showcase their work through a Film Showcase event every semester as well as enter a 72-Hour Film Competition every winter break; we also host an annual awards ceremony to honor the best filmmakers in our program.
Ideal Candidate:
The ideal candidate for this position is an educator who actively embraces building a Film & Television program to serve populations historically underrepresented and underserved in higher education. With knowledge of both the strengths embodied by our diverse students and the barriers they face, the ideal candidate is well-poised to teach, support, and mentor Gavilan students. The ideal candidate desires connection with students and the community beyond the classroom and works to foster cross-cultural and anti-racist media collaborations with Gavilan departments, student groups, and community organizations. Essential Duties
- Teach 14-16 lecture-equivalent hours per semester.
- The college offers day, evening, and online classes, and faculty will be required to teach courses as assigned which include dual enrollment, Inspiring Scholars, daytime, evening, hybrid, and online sections.
- Create inclusive, student-centered learning environments that support the growth and success of diverse learners through thoughtful course preparation, effective teaching methodologies, and meaningful feedback.
- Cultivate relationships with students to support their growth through office hours and regular interaction (both in person and online).
- Create, assess, and update curriculum to meet the needs of diverse students in all modalities.
- Actively engage in department and division meetings, events, and initiatives.
- Contribute to campus committees and decision-making processes that support the college's mission and goals.
- Participate in ongoing professional learning, particularly around anti-racism, diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility.
- Adhere to department, division, and district policies and procedures for faculty employees.
- Evaluate student work using clear criteria relevant to the course content and student learning outcomes and provide feedback to students in a timely manner.
- Develop and implement a variety of effective teaching and assessment methods including the use of computers and information technology to engage student interest and support for a variety of learning styles
- Develop effective online course materials and build online learning communities that meet accessible online course requirements and Title 5 55211 Effective Contact Policy requirements.
- Maintain and submit accurate records according to published deadlines (i.e., grades, syllabi, attendance reports).
- Continue in related professional career development throughout employment and remain current in the field through course work, conferences, workshops and other appropriate means.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications, Education, and Experience
- Master's degree in Film/Cinema and Media Studies, Film, Television, and Media Studies, Drama/Theater, Mass Communication OR Bachelor's degree in any of the above AND Master's degree in Visual Studies, Media Studies, English, or Communication OR the equivalent
- Demonstrated ability to develop and employ culturally relevant course content, anti-racist pedagogical techniques, and effective practices for engaging students who are diverse and/or from historically underrepresented groups.

Desirable Attributes:
- Experience teaching college Film & Television classes.
- Experience on professional Film and Television productions, especially creating commercials and PSAs.
- Proficiency with live streaming events.
- Experience with all aspects of news and journalism production.
- Experience with online content creation.
- Experience utilizing an equity framework to develop student-centered curriculum, assess student learning, and utilize support programs to increase student retention and success.
- Ability to collaboratively envision and foster a thriving Film & Television program that offers a diversity of courses and engages students with the campus and community.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
- Ability to conduct classes in a virtual learning environment using Canvas or other methods of remote learning.
- Experience and skill incorporating elements of diversity, equity, and inclusion into all areas of responsibility.
- Strategically build support and participation among colleagues for equity-related initiatives.
- Teach through positive race-consciousness and embracing human difference.
- Communicate and work cooperatively with colleagues (within discipline and college-wide) on matters regarding course offerings, programs, and activities that would enhance the development of the department and college.
