Job Summary:

The Vice President for Academic Affairs (VPAA) serves as the Chief Academic Officer and a key strategic leader at Volunteer State Community College. This role provides visionary and collaborative leadership to ensure that academic programs are innovative, comprehensive, and aligned with the evolving needs of students, communities, and workforce partners. The VPAA is responsible for all academic credit instruction and academic support services, including the library, learning commons, and academic innovation.

Working closely with faculty, staff, and college leadership, the VPAA champions student success, teaching excellence, and access across all campuses and modalities. The VPAA plays a central role in advancing the College's mission and strategic goals, ensuring that all academic initiatives are guided by purpose and grounded in data-informed decision-making.

Job Duties:

Serve as a key member of the President's Leadership Team and work in partnership with college leadership to advance the College's strategic vision. Provide leadership, supervision, and support for all academic divisions, including faculty, academic support, tutoring, and library services. Champion academic innovation, technology integration, and equitable teaching practices. Promote a culture of assessment, continuous improvement, and accountability in all academic areas. Responsible for evaluation of academic and related academic support functions; promote and lead the development of academic programs. Lead the development, evaluation, and enhancement of academic programs, ensuring relevance, rigor, and responsiveness to student and workforce needs. Ensure compliance with regional and program-specific accreditation requirements, and regulatory boards. Develop, evaluate, and assure compliance with Academic Affairs policies and procedures. Collaborate with Student Services, Workforce Development, and Institutional Advancement to strengthen enrollment, retention, and completion outcomes. Manage academic budgets, staffing plans, and operational resources effectively. Support and engage with faculty and staff across all campuses to foster professional development, shared leadership, and cross-campus consistency. Supervise the hiring, evaluation, and promotion of faculty and Academic Affairs staff; oversee the faculty tenure process. Develop and strengthen partnerships with local school districts, universities, employers, and community organizations. Represent the College on state, regional, and national academic affairs committees and initiatives. Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

An earned doctorate from a regionally accredited college or university.
A minimum of three (3) years of college teaching experience.
A minimum of five (5) years of experience with increasing responsibility in leadership of academic and/or career and technical instructional programs in an institution of higher education.
A minimum of six (6) years of administrative experience at the level of Dean (or the functional equivalent) or above.
Demonstrated experience in leading faculty, managing budgets, strategic planning, accreditation, and supporting student success initiatives and assessment.
Note: Equivalent leadership experience beyond a Dean-level role may be considered, especially where evidence of innovation, team development, and cross-functional collaboration is present.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience at a comprehensive community college.
Proven success in designing and implementing academic pathways, dual enrollment, and workforce-aligned programs.
Familiarity with emerging technologies and alternative credentialing models.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Strong belief in the mission of the community college and a student-centered mindset.
Commitment to collaborative governance, transparency, and relationship-building across all College divisions.
Ability to lead through complex change and foster a culture of innovation and continuous improvement.
Deep knowledge of pedagogy, curriculum design, instructional assessment, and student learning outcomes.
Strategic thinker with experience in data-informed planning, resource management, and institutional effectiveness.
Effective communicator and community-builder who can represent the College with internal and external stakeholders.
Experience in faculty hiring, development, tenure, and promotion processes.
Understanding of SACSCOC accreditation or other nationally recognized accreditation and related program-specific accreditations.

Pay Rate: $111,024 - $144,337 annual salary depending on experience
