THIS IS A GRANT-FUNDED POSITION
JOB SUMMARY/ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Under the direction of the Principal Investigator, the Researcher 1 fulfills tasks critical to achieving the goals of our NIH-funded research on the genetics of addiction. These tasks involve small animal care and sterile surgery including management of anesthetics and post-op care. Other duties include stereotaxic brain surgery for guide cannula implantation and microinfusions into selective brain regions.
Responsibilities
- Handles small animal care and sterile surgery including management of anesthetics and post-op care.
- Conducts surgeries on jugular or other vascular surgery for sterile catheter implantation.
- Provides assistance (such as depth of anesthesia monitoring, temperature checks, etc.) during non-survival surgeries on rodents.
- Performs brain sectioning, histology and light microscopy.
- Conducts nicotine or opioid self-administration experiments using Med Associates operant chambers.
- Collects tissue samples from rats.
- Prepares experimental solutions.
- Responsible for autoclaving laboratory material, cleaning of glassware/plasticware, and laboratory sanitation.
- Assists rotating students and junior fellows on the proper use of instruments and laboratory techniques.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
EDUCATION: Bachelor's Degree.(Master's Degree preferred.) (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED)
EXPERIENCE: Three (3) years of experience with small animal care and sterile surgery including management of anesthetics and post-op care. OR Master's Degree and one (1) year of experience with small animal care and sterile surgery including management of anesthetics and post-op care. (Previous experience with stereotaxic brain surgery for guide cannula implantation.)
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge and deep interest in experimental laboratory-based research involving small animals.
- Knowledge and skills involved in handling small animals.
- Knowledgeable and skillful in the techniques used to perform jugular or other vascular surgery for sterile catheter implantation in small animals and in the administration of anesthetics and post-operative care.
- Ability to learn and perform new and complex surgical tasks and to perform these at a consistently high level.
- Knowledge and skills in preparing specified dilutions and amounts of sterile drug solutions and in administering these sterile solutions to small animals.
WORK SCHEDULE: This position may occasionally be required to work evenings and weekends.
