Lecturer in English for Speakers of Other Languages
The successful candidate will teach five ESOL courses with a focus on academic writing, reading, or and/or grammar. In addition to teaching, the successful candidate will participate in support activities for the ESOL program, including attending faculty meetings. Responsibilities will include preparing and teaching language courses, holding regularly scheduled office hours, attending faculty meetings, attending training sessions, developing and contributing materials to the program, participating in the administration of the departmental final exam, and engaging in ESOL program activities. On occasion, the successful candidate may also be asked to teach one or more Spanish language courses.
Essential Functions
- Teach ESOL grammar, reading, and/or academic writing courses ranging from high-beginning to low-advanced levels.
- Collaborate with the UTEP library to develop OER materials to be used in the class and later contributed to the ESOL program.
- Deliver instruction in different modalities including face-to-face, Hybrid, and HyFlex models.
- Implement research-based best practices to deliver instruction through a fundamentally communicative approach with a content-based and/or task-based focus.
- Incorporate a variety of materials and teaching techniques to enhance student learning and outcomes and to maintain student interest.
- Evaluate student work using criteria relevant to the course content and learning objectives.
- Provide a classroom environment conducive to learning, establishing and maintaining classroom control.
- Attend meetings and/or professional development workshops/training as requested.
- Contribute to the development, administration, proctoring, and rating of the departmental final exam.
- Keep current in area(s) of expertise related to subject being taught.
- Adhere to the prescribed curriculum and standards. Participate in ESOL program activities designed to enhance student engagement. Maintain student attendance and performance records.

Job Requirements:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and ability required. - Master of Arts in Applied Linguistics or a related field, or Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing or related field.
- At least five years of experience teaching ESOL to adult learners
Preferred Qualifications
- TESOL Certificate
- Experience teaching Spanish
- Experience teaching online
- Experience with Blackboard, or another Learning Management System.
- Experience with MS Teams, Zoom for online course delivery
- Demonstrated success in applying best practices to ensure mastery of program/course learning objectives.
- Familiarity with diverse teaching methodologies.
- Experience teaching online.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to exchange information on the phone or in person.
- Ability to use classroom technology and/or equipment proficiency.
- Ability to maintain an effective classroom learning atmosphere.
- Ability to interact effectively with the public, students, faculty and university personnel.
