Position Information

Hiring Department: Division of Marketing and Communications

Posting End Date: Open until filled. This posting may close once a sufficient number of qualified applications have been received.

Hours: 40 hours per week, standard Monday- Friday 8:00am- 5:00pm, flexibility is required on evenings and weekends. Occasional traveling required.

FLSA status: Exempt.

Earliest Start Date: 8/4/2025.

Salary: Commensurate with education and experience.

Purpose of Position

The Assistant Director of Editorial and Digital Content plays a key leadership role in shaping the voice, tone, and content strategy for the University's marketing and communications efforts. This position oversees a team of writers and content creators responsible for developing editorial and digital content that supports the University's strategic messages, enhances brand consistency, and engages target audiences across web, social media, and other owned channels.

This position is a senior-level individual contributor in design with direct reports, working on complex assignments and responsibilities where outcomes are defined, but methods and procedures are based on professional judgement.

The Assistant Director will work under the supervision of the Associate Vice President for Enrollment Marketing and Creative Services to decide on the direction and voice of the messaging, while considering overall strategies of the university. They are responsible for the written deliverables - print and digital - to support UTEP's educational, research, and community service missions. Working with UTEP Creative Services, the Assistant Director and their team create high-impact content that meet and exceed the quality standards commiserate a R1 research university that is part of Texas' flagship university system.

Essential Functions

  • Supervise and mentor a team of writers, content creators, and social media coordinators.

  • Lead the writing and editing of marketing copy, news content, video scripts, digital ad copy, emails, presentations, website copy and social media messaging that supports University initiatives.

  • Plan and manage editorial calendars and Wrike to ensure timely, consistent, and strategic messaging across platforms.

  • Collaborate with designers, cinematographers, photographers, and marketing partners to deliver integrated campaigns and cohesive storytelling.

  • Review and edit written content for clarity, consistency, tone, accuracy, and alignment with UTEP's brand and voice.

  • Manage content workflows and project timelines to meet deadlines and quality standards.

  • Analyze engagement metrics and use insights to improve content performance across platforms.

  • Ensure UTEP's mission of access excellence is represented in all published materials.

  • Serve as a content consultant to internal partners, helping units craft effective messaging for their audiences.

  • Stay current with content marketing trends, social media innovations, and digital storytelling best practices.

  • Protect and store all digital assets as directed by Marketing and Communication's standard operating procedures.

  • Comply with all State and University policies.

  • Other duties as assigned.

    Supervisory Responsibilities Duties may include overseeing editorial and digital content staff, including Editorial and

    Digital Content Specialists. May supervise interns and/or coordinate with freelancers.

    Qualifications

    To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

    Required Qualifications:

    Education: Bachelor's degree in English, Communications, Journalism, Marketing, or related field.

    and

    Experience: Three years of related experience and training to the statement of duties and responsibilities; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Occasional traveling required.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    Five years of professional experience in content development, editorial management, digital media, or related experience to the statement of duties and responsibilities; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

    Higher education experience or working knowledge of university audiences, management experience, proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite or other digital publishing tools, understanding of SEO principles and content performance metrics, and bilingual or multilingual communication skills.
