About the Position:

This on-campus, in-person position is located on the beautiful SMU campus in Dallas, Texas and involves travel to interesting locations both in the U.S. and internationally.

The seismoacoustic research group at SMU is seeking a skilled and motivated individual to join our scientists and engineers in supporting remote seismic and infrasound stations across the U.S. and internationally. These stations play a vital role in global nuclear explosion monitoring. We're looking for someone with strong problem-solving abilities and a passion for hands-on work with mechanical and electrical systems, both in the lab and in the field.

In this role, you'll monitor and maintain real-time data collection systems, troubleshoot issues, and assist with equipment installations at remote sites. Expect to travel up to 25%, sometimes on short notice, for field campaigns lasting up to two weeks. If you enjoy getting your hands dirty, being outdoors, and solving technical challenges on the fly, this job is for you.

You'll collaborate with technicians, engineers, and agency partners, test and repair equipment, and document your work with precision. Excellent communication, organization, and time management are key.

Essential Functions:

  • Keep Systems Running Smoothly: Monitor real-time data streams from our global sensor networks. Use your troubleshooting skills to spot issues and jump into action-performing maintenance on hardware, software, and communications systems to keep everything humming along.

  • Go on Field Adventures: Travel to unique locations across the U.S. and internationally to help install and maintain seismic and infrasound equipment. You'll be part of a team keeping vital science operations in remote settings alive. A valid driver's license and a U.S. Passport are required, and you'll need to be flexible for occasional, extended trips (up to ~2 weeks), sometimes on short notice

  • Be a Technical Bridge: Collaborate with local technicians, partner engineers, and agency contacts to solve real-world engineering challenges to keep both legacy and new systems performing at their best.

  • Get Hands-On with Gear: Test and troubleshoot systems and components both in the lab and in the field. You might even oversee board-level rework-if something's broken, you'll help fix it.

  • Stay Organized and Sharp: Keep detailed records of plans, systems, and equipment, including inventory and usage logs. Your attention to detail and clear writing will help keep the whole team aligned.

  • Share Your Work: Create accurate, professional technical documentation and reports for internal teams and external stakeholders. We'd like you to explain the cool things you've done when presenting your work in meetings or team briefings.

  • Jump In When Needed: Be ready for the occasional evening or weekend work-especially during urgent outages or time-sensitive field deployments. Flexibility is key, but so is the reward of making an immediate impact.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

Bachelor's degree and 2 years of experience OR equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience is required.

Candidate with degree in physical sciences, engineering, geosciences, or a closely related field is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

The ideal candidate will have strong problem-solving abilities, with the capability to identify issues, analyze them effectively, and develop practical solutions. Strong organizational, planning, and time management skills are also essential.

Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills are required, along with the ability to work well in a collaborative team setting.

A candidate demonstrating ability to quickly learn new technical skills is highly desirable. Knowledge of multiple IT protocols and network topology and prior Linux system experience is preferred. Candidate must be proficient with MS Office suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

A valid driver's license and a valid U.S. passport (or ability to obtain a valid U.S Passport) is required.
