Job Description
The Controller reports to the Vice President for Finance and Operations (VPFO) and is primarily responsible for effective performance management, accountability and custody of the financial assets of the college. This position establishes and monitors financial accountability and compliance with federal, state and NSHE requirements for accounting, financial and budget management. Provides supervision over the business office staff that includes the following functional areas: Disbursements, Travel, Student Accounts, Receivables, Cashiering, Budgeting, Grant Financial Management, Financial Accounting and Mail. Works closely and collaboratively with all departments and senior administration of the institution. This position also regularly works with System Administration staff, external auditing firms, banking institutions and NSHE committees composed of members from all Nevada institutions.
The Controller works in an office on the main campus and rarely travels to other GBC campuses. The successful candidate will participate in several state-wide or national meetings each year that require overnight travel. This position requires substantial concentration with deadline pressures.
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in accounting or a CPA designation is required with at least five years of financial management experience, two years of which were in college or university, non-profit, or governmental accounting.
A master's degree in business administration is desirable.
Knowledge and experience with current technologies, financial accounting software, data extraction applications, spreadsheets, financial statement preparation, generally accepted accounting principles, and customer centric management skills are essential. Ability to communicate administrative policy, accounting procedures and budget status at the user's level is required. Numerical computations are complex, varied and require interpretation of results and formulae.
Responsibilities:
Errors made by the Controller may cause considerable financial loss or have considerable adverse effect on public or employee relations. Therefore, the Controller position requires a high degree of integrity and ethics in decision making to protect the financial assets of the institution, students and employees. Deviation from internal control structures or errors in reporting could result in serious consequences or potential litigation against the college.
Work is performed with limited supervision following broad guidelines on the results to be achieved. The Controller provides continuous supervision to the business office staff of three employees. Advises and assists management with development and maintenance of grants budgets.
1. Supervises the Controller's office staff who perform the functions of grant financial management, bank reconciliation, general ledger maintenance, fixed asset accounting, accounts receivable, accounts payable, employee travel and campus mail.
2. Prepares annual financial statements and supporting work papers in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles. An independent certified public accounting firm audits the financial statements.
3. Plan, organize, and leads efforts to:
- Develop and maintain accounting systems for all college funds
- Develop and implement student accounts process workflow, policies and procedures
- Develop, implement and maintain a system for billing and receiving all college payments
- Ensure the effective management of college investments
- Provide guidance to students, college staff, GBC Foundation in the areas stated above in compliance with federal, state and local laws, rules and policies.
- Provide training and education programs related to effective handling of cash and student accounts.
- Establish and maintain systems to ensure internal control in cash handling, revenue billing, accounts receivable and student accounts.
4. Leads year-end financial closing process and the preparation of financial reports.
5. Responsible for institutional compliance to NSHE purchasing, travel and business policies.
6. Prepares annual financial IPED reports.
7. Researches and prepares initial responses to request for information from the NSHE System Office, internal audit and granting agencies.
8. Serves on assigned Faculty Senate committees.
9. Works in a professional and collegial manner with faculty and students in the best interest of the college and the people it services.
10. Performs other duties as assigned by the VPFO.
Travel
This position may require travel to other campus locations and throughout the service area, which could include occasional overnight stays with or without reasonable accommodation as per the Americans with Disabilities Act. Travel is part of supporting students and programs across the region. A strong commitment to serving rural communities is essential.
Compensation Grade
Administrative Faculty - D
This is a 12 month "A" contract, 12 month contracts are used for year round programs.
The budgeted salary range for this position is $86,445 - $125,000. Salary is based on relatable education and experience, internal equity and budgets.

Grants-in-aid for Faculty Employees
Great Basin College is proud to provide a reduced-rate tuition benefit to faculty and qualified dependents. Faculty can take up to six credits per semester at a reduced rate. Dependents of faculty have unlimited credits, but in order to be eligible children must be unmarried and under the age of 24 and must receive at least 50% of their financial support from the employee and/or employee's spouse or domestic partner.
