The College of DuPage is a comprehensive community college located 27 miles west of downtown Chicago, vitally connected to our local area for over 50 years. Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
The Coordinator of Civic Engagement will foster student engagement through civic, social, and community-based initiatives, including voter engagement and outreach. This position will help develop, implement, and assess programs that encourage students to become active, informed, and responsible citizens both on campus and within their communities. The coordinator will work collaboratively with students, faculty, staff, and community partners to create opportunities for students to engage in public service and other forms of civic participation. This position is critical in empowering students to address social issues, participate in the democratic process, and make meaningful contributions to society.

  • Plan, organize, and execute student-centered civic engagement programs, events, and initiatives that promote community service and public policy awareness.
  • Oversees and is primary decision-maker on developmental initiatives that provide students opportunities to engage in leadership development, civic learning, and community service.
  • Manage the recruitment, selection, and mentorship of students to foster their growth as active, engaged citizens.
  • Responsible for financial planning within professional area and ensures budget alignment with program goals.
  • Develop partnerships with local, regional, and national organizations to provide students with service and civic engagement opportunities.
  • Advise the student-led voter engagement committee of the Student Leadership Council.
  • Serve as a resource to student clubs and organizations involved in community service and advocacy projects.
  • Provide guidance for students interested in engaging in service opportunities and leadership roles related to civic matters.
  • Collaborate with faculty to integrate civic engagement into academic curricula through co-curricular programs and community-focused initiatives.
  • Build and maintain relationships with local non-profits, government agencies, and community groups to connect students with public service and civic engagement opportunities.
  • Engage with campus stakeholders to promote the importance of civic responsibility and the role of higher education in fostering active citizenship.
  • Provides input to develop action plans for the department to achieve outcomes.
  • Track and report on the effectiveness of civic engagement programs through data collection, surveys, and assessments.
  • Prepare reports for senior leadership on program outcomes and student participation in civic engagement activities.
  • Provide workshops, training sessions, and resources for students to develop leadership, advocacy, and civic engagement skills.
  • Stay current on best practices, trends, and research in the field of civic engagement and integrate relevant information into COD's programs.
  • Assist with coordinating and supporting large-scale campus events related to social issues, elections, community service, and other relevant topics.
  • Serve as a point of contact for inquiries related to civic engagement activities and student involvement.
  • Other duties as assigned.


  • Qualifications:

    • Education
      • A Bachelor's degree in Higher Education, Social Sciences, Political Science, Sociology, or a related field or equivalent experience required.
      • A Master's degree in College Student Personnel, Higher Education, Leadership, Social Work, Public Policy, or a related field preferred.
    • Experience

    REQUIRED:
    • Minimum of 1-3 years of experience in student services, community engagement, volunteer coordination, or a related field.
    • Experience with event planning and facilitating student programs.
    • Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
    • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with students, staff, and community partner

    Preferred:
    • Experience working with diverse student populations and community organizations.
    • Knowledge of service-learning, community service initiatives, and civic engagement practices.
    • Experience in grant writing or securing funding for student-centered initiatives.
    • Familiarity with the DuPage County community and its resources.
    • Prior experience in a community college setting.


    Working Conditions:

  • PC, copier, and computer software including Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and data management tools. Busy high traffic office environment with high level of guest student/faculty/community interaction. Must be flexible and willing to adjust to an active learning environment. Hours are variable; primarily regular office hours with some evenings and weekends, including some overnight attendance and professional/student conferences. Meetings and programs may be held at sites other than the main campus. Must have mobility to bend and stoop and vision adequate to read a variety of print materials and computer screens.

    Hiring Range:
    8 Salary/Starting salary beginning at $49,640, based on experience.

    Competitive starting pay is dependent on education and experience.
