Division of Public Safety at CU Boulder encourages applications for an Executive Director - Office of the Vice Chancellor for Public Safety! Reporting to the Vice Chancellor for Public Safety, the Executive Director of the Office of the Vice Chancellor serves as an executive leader responsible for advancing campus safety, operational effectiveness, and community trust across the CU Boulder Division of Public Safety (DPS). This role manages high-level initiatives, coordinates cross-departmental efforts, and ensures alignment with DPS and University-wide priorities such as video management systems (VMS), electronic access control systems, situational awareness systems, records management systems, etc., ensuring reliable, scalable, and innovative systems that advance CU Boulder's mission to safeguard its people, assets, and community.
The Executive Director supervises key leadership positions, including the Director of Accreditation & Senior Executive Advisor, Director of Professional Accountability, the Director of Public Safety IT Systems, and Director of Strategic Communications. This role drives a culture of accountability, innovation, and continuous improvement while delivering measurable results.
Key Areas of Responsibility:
- Risk & Compliance Oversight: Manage planning, risk tracking, data privacy, Clery Act compliance, and accreditation support.
- Strategic Technology Leadership: Develop and lead the roadmap for public safety tech systems aligned with university safety and IT goals.
- Innovation & Evaluation: Assess emerging technologies (AI, analytics, cybersecurity) to improve situational awareness and efficiency.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Act as the primary liaison among Public Safety, IT, Legal, Facilities, and campus partners to drive policy and operational alignment.
Current and Anticipated Initiatives:
- Supporting enhancing campus safety phase 1 and 2.
- Implementing recommendations from the 21st Century Policing Report.
- Organizing and enhancing training and professional development programs.
- Leading initiatives to improve safety operational efficiencies.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be
Initiative Management and Execution
- Lead high-priority initiatives from initiation through completion, ensuring adherence to timelines, budgets, and quality standards.
- Develop, manage, and track initiative plans, budgets, achievements, and measurable outcomes.
- Oversee enhancements to accreditation, training programs, and operational efficiencies.
Collaboration and Partner Engagement
- Build and lead cross-functional teams to achieve DPS objectives.
- Serve as the primary liaison to campus leadership, faculty, staff, students, and external partners.
- Foster strong, trust-based relationships with community partners.
- Coordinate and facilitate interdisciplinary collaboration across University departments.
Analysis and Policy Development
- Analyze operational challenges, risk, and compliance issues to provide data-driven recommendations.
- Formulate, implement, and maintain policies aligned with DPS and University-wide goals.
- Ensure compliance with city, state, federal laws, and institutional policies.
Communication and Reporting
- Direct the flow of information on initiatives, ensuring transparency and accuracy.
- Prepare and deliver presentations, reports, and briefings for senior leadership and external collaborators.
- Promote a culture of communication excellence, accountability, and continuous improvement.
What We Can Offer
Starting salary range is $150,000 - $180,000.

What We Require
- Bachelor's degree in policy, business, public administration, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Six years of progressively responsible experience in public safety or related fields, including supervisory experience.
- Demonstrated leadership in managing complex initiatives and diverse teams.

- Collaboration & Influence: Skilled in relationship-building, consensus-building, and navigating complex organizations.

- Technical Skill: Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, presentation/graphic tools, and safety/security technologies.
