About the Opportunity

JOB SUMMARY

This position delivers holistic, inclusive, developmental, and student-focused academic advising to undergraduate students in the College of Science including identifying students' interests, abilities, and academic goals and in making decisions regarding their academic career. The main mission of the academic advisor is to ensure a student-centered academic advising environment for students in the academic departments (Biology, Chemistry and Chemical Biology, Marine and Environmental Science, Mathematics, Physics, and Psychology) and academic programs (Behavioral Neuroscience, Biochemistry, and Linguistics) in the College of Science. Advisors work closely with faculty advisors in their assigned departments/programs, as well as with academic coordinators and other advisors in the college to advise undergraduates on a wide range of academic issues from orientation through academic progress to graduation.

Academic Advisors assist in identifying struggling or at-risk students including making appropriate referrals to other college resources, long-term planning and registration advising, add/drop or withdrawal assistance, and major declaration; maintain detailed student records; participates in departmental and committee meetings as appropriate for supporting assigned students; develops and coordinates relationships with various offices on campus to better serve students; facilitates multiple sections of the First Year Experience course.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Advising and Advising-Related Activities

Provide overall guidance to students on their academic goals. Interpret and explain academic policies and procedures to students; advise on College curricular matters, Major requirements, NUPath and other academic and personal issues as they arise; act as liaison between student and faculty or ASC; troubleshoot for student grievances. Monitor students' academic progress through graduation.

Advising Administrative Responsibilities

Maintain accurate student records as it relates to: Commencement list

management; the degree audit system known as DARS; transfer credit evaluation; Dean's certification reports; Academic Probation reviews; and student status processes.

Teaching & Orientation

Participate in teaching first-year seminars, orientation sessions, and registration

advising for new students.

Advising-Related Projects

As time allows, develop projects and programs that help the College achieve its goals for retention, student centered advising and other measures. These projects may be short-term oriented or long-term projects that become permanent programs in the college.

QUALIFICATIONS

Master's degree in an arts and sciences or education-related field required. Previous experience in higher education is preferred. Strong organizational, analytical, and interpersonal communication (both verbal and written) are necessary. Computer skills and experience in working with databases desirable. Ability to learn and effectively utilize the College and University-level computer systems in day-to-day advising is necessary. Ability to work well with a variety of personalities and to juggle many activities simultaneously, take initiative, follow through with projects and to work as an integral member of a team is necessary.

Expected Hiring Range:
$52,820.00 - $74,607.50

With the pay range(s) shown above, the starting salary will depend on several factors, which may include your education, experience, location, knowledge and expertise, and skills as well as a pay comparison to similarly-situated employees already in the role. Salary ranges are reviewed regularly and are subject to change.
