Summary

The Prior Learning Program Coordinator is part of the student support team within Nontraditional and Military Student Services and a member of the broad team of professional academic student support staff at the University. Under the direction of the immediate supervisor and in accordance with university strategies, the Program Coordinator provides essential support and service to nontraditional and military students and contributes to the university's goals of supporting student access, persistence, and retention to timely graduation. The Program Coordinator is responsible for administering and enhancing the Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) program to support university and state goals to increase adult learner degree attainment.

Most nontraditional students begin or return to higher education having achieved college level learning outside of the traditional college classroom. The Program Coordinator will work with individual students, as well as with faculty and staff to facilitate recognition of college credits for prior learning to be evaluated through the Credit for Prior Learning process. Nontraditional students or adult learners beginning or returning to college face many challenges and the Program Coordinator will coordinate efforts to support adult student success recognizing and providing resources to this student population. The Program Coordinator will provide comprehensive academic support and guidance to degree attainment for nontraditional students.

Essential Functions

Credit for Prior Learning (CPL)
  • Collaborate with faculty, staff, and administrators to implement and expand Credit for Prior Learning (CPL), Competency-Based Education (CBE), and effective adult learner support practices.
  • Oversee and manage the CPL program, increasing awareness and utilization of CPL options, including:
    1. National exams (e.g., CLEP, ACE)
    2. University-based Credit by Exam
    3. Credit by Validation for external education and training
    4. Portfolio Review
    5. Standardized industry credentials
  • Develop and implement outreach strategies to increase student participation in the CPL process.
  • Maintain and effectively utilize the university's CPL management system, staying informed about emerging CPL platforms and technologies.
  • Monitor student progress throughout the CPL process and provide timely feedback to students and faculty.
  • Design and deliver CPL-related professional development and training for the university community.
  • Produce reports to track participation, outcomes, and overall effectiveness of the CPL program.
    • Research and apply best practices and emerging innovations in Credit for Prior Learning.
Student Support and Retention
  • Provides academic support as a program advisor, assisting nontraditional students to access resources that address the many challenges and barriers to overall college success.
  • Refer students to appropriate resources within BGSU and non-BGSU support offices and/or organizations as needed to support student success.
  • Review student academic progress and performance leading to recommendations for students on specific actions to enhance academic and career goals.
  • Assess incoming nontraditional and military student transcripts and experiences for prior college level learning credits that apply to degree completion as part of the Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) program. This includes Credit by Exam, Credit by Validation, credit by Portfolio, credit by Industry Credential and review of work and life experiences for possible academic credit.
  • May be responsible for advising a specific population/cohort of students, requiring additional specialized knowledge and skills, such as those students pursuing CPL.
Administrative
  • Manage student support caseload through the utilization of online/digital and analog administrative programs and processes utilizing Navigate and CSS.
  • Maintain and update student files and records in accordance with federal, state and university regulations.
  • Coordinate annual scholarship process to award numerous nontraditional scholarships to students and maintain appropriate records and communication.
  • Additional department specific duties and responsibilities as assigned.
  • May lead and/or participate in research activities related to CPL, CBE and adult learner success efforts.
  • May be responsible for developing programming that implements state-initiatives related to adult-learner success.
  • Other specific duties and responsibilities as assigned


Minimum Qualifications


The following Degree is required:
  • Bachelor's Degree
The following Degree is preferred:
  • Master's degree in Higher Education Administration, Curriculum, College Student Personnel, Guidance and Counseling, MBA or a related academic discipline

The following Experience is required:
  • 1 year of credit for prior learning assessment, academic advising experience, or experience in another college functional area with direct student contact
