Position Description
Performs skilled work of the journeyperson/tradesperson level in the operation and maintenance of equipment in a central heating and cooling plant. Responsibilities involve the efficient operation and maintenance of all utility equipment in the central heating and cooling plant. Work is performed under general supervision with evaluation based on periodic inspection of charts and records concerning operating efficiency and observation of the quality of utility services rendered.

About the Department and/or College
The primary responsibility of the Section of Utilities is to provide manufactured utilities to the Texas Tech campus, the Health Sciences Center, University Medical Center, The Texas Tech University Museum, and the Fiber and Biopolymer Research Institute in the form of steam, chilled water, compressed air, and treated water. CHACP I was constructed in 1967 and has since gone through two major expansions. The first was in 1974 when Boiler #3, Chiller #3, and cooling towers #3 & #4 were added to increase the capacity of the plant. The second was in 1999 when Chiller #4 was added as well as four additional Cooling Tower Cells to further increase the cooling capacity of the plant.

Major/Essential Functions
Maintenance - Under direct supervision, with technical manuals/procedures, safely perform maintenance, minor repairs, testing and upkeep of plant equipment and systems including cleaning, painting, etc. Immediately report unusual equipment operations and safety concerns to appropriate personnel or supervisor for guidance.

Operations - Safely and efficiently operate and swap plant equipment under supervision to ensure uninterrupted service. Follow procedures for abnormal situations, perform equipment and water chemistry testing, and report any irregularities or safety concerns. Assist with minor repairs, cleaning, and maintenance of plant systems.

Miscellaneous - Complete PQS training per procedures, mentor and learn from coworkers in plant operations, maintenance, repairs, and water chemistry, and perform other tasks as assigned by supervisors.

Administrative - Accurately complete work orders, record equipment issues, and manage Equipment Out of Service tags. Maintain detailed logs and reports of plant operations, utilities, and equipment status as directed by supervisors.

Required Qualifications
High school or equivalency, and competency in written and mathematical skills. Academic performance, job experience, or advanced training or education that indicates the employee will be able to complete the Personnel Qualification System. Background and experience indicating a mechanical aptitude. Knowledge of hand tools, occupational hazards and safety precautions. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working with boilers, steam systems, condensate systems, chillers, cooling towers, heat exchangers, pumps, turbines, chemistry, instrumentation, maintenance, safety practices, hazardous materials handling,
  • Completion of formal training in stationary engineering, or power plant operations, experience working with boilers, steam systems, condensate systems, chillers, cooling towers, heat exchangers, pumps, turbines, chemistry, instrumentation, maintenance, safety practices, hazardous materials handling
  • CFC Handling Certified "Universal".


Pay Range
$16.39 - $21.30 - $26.25
