The Anthropology Department at University of Utah (U of U) invites applications for a full-time, career-line Assistant Professor (Lecturer) in Archaeology who will also serve as Director of the University of Utah Archaeological Center (UUAC). This is a permanent, non-tenure-eligible, 9-month appointment with full University benefits, including retirement and health insurance. The anticipated start date is July 1, 2026, and candidates must hold a PhD by that time.

We seek an individual with a demonstrated record of teaching and mentoring excellence who can offer introductory archaeology courses as well as upper division regional and/or topical courses. The ideal candidate will also have fieldwork experience in western North America and experience working with cultural resource management (CRM) firms and/or federal or state agencies.
As Director of the UUAC, the successful candidate will:

Mentor and supervise students (both undergraduate and graduate);

Lead weekly UUAC meetings;

Oversee UUAC facilities, resources, and operations; and

Manage the Center's approximately $20,000 annual budget, which supports student employment and research initiatives.

Because this position includes significant responsibilities beyond classroom instruction, the teaching load is reduced from the standard career-line requirement to four courses per academic year (two per semester).

The successful candidate will be an active member of the Department of Anthropology and will be expected to participate in faculty meetings, serve on student committees, and contribute to the broader intellectual and service life of the department.

The University of Utah Archaeological Center (UUAC) is a research and teaching arm of the Department of Anthropology. The Center's mission is to train the next generation of anthropological archaeologists, facilitate collaborative archaeological research and promote the understanding of archaeology and prehistory in the wider community.
