Summary:

The Department of Classics at Grand Valley State University invites applications for a one-year position as a Visiting Assistant Professor of Classics. We seek a broadly trained colleague with the desire to contribute to a vibrant and forward-thinking Classics community. Required Qualifications and Education:

ABD in Classics
Evidence of preparation in teaching undergraduate courses in translation, including classical mythology, Greek civilization, and classical drama.
Individuals from all backgrounds, including from underrepresented groups, are encouraged to apply. Successful candidates must be able to effectively engage with students, colleagues, and community members with a broad range of backgrounds and experiences
Strong communication and interpersonal skills, such as the ability to interact with others with respect and empathy.

Preferred Qualifications and Education:

A PhD in Classics in hand by the start of the appointment in August 2026.
Evidence of experience in teaching undergraduate courses in translation, including classical mythology, Greek civilization, and classical drama.

Responsibilities:

Responsibilities of visiting faculty include a 4/4 teaching load of courses assigned based on departmental needs. The position is full-time for one academic year (mid-August 2026 through the end of April 2027). Teaching will be in-person, but experience teaching online asynchronously is also valued. Visiting faculty positions may be extended for two additional one-year appointments depending on departmental needs and faculty performance. Professional development opportunities and some support for conference travel are available.

Salary/Benefits

The salary is $50,000.
