Position Announcement

This Senior Network Engineer role offers the opportunity to take ownership of the institution's network infrastructure and serve as a key technical leader in shaping its long-term design, performance, and security. In this position, you'll lead the development and implementation of scalable, reliable network solutions while ensuring strong system interoperability and operational stability across the enterprise. You'll play a critical role in maintaining network health through strategic planning for upgrades, patching, backup, and recovery, while also driving standards, policies, and capacity planning efforts. This role partners closely with cross-functional teams-including systems, security, and applications-to support institutional priorities and resolve complex technical challenges. In addition to hands-on engineering work, you'll have the opportunity to mentor and support the growth of junior engineers, making a meaningful impact on both the technology environment and the team's development.

**This is an in-person position and must be performed within the state of Utah; remote work is not an option for this role.

Summary of Responsibilities


  • Design & Engineering Develops network solutions that support institutional needs, ensuring scalability, performance, and security. Develops configuration standards, evaluates network designs, and leads the implementation of complex systems. Provides technical guidance and serves as the primary resource for network design decisions.
  • Monitoring, Maintenance & Optimization Oversees network performance and reliability through proactive monitoring and maintenance strategies. Defines and implements patching, upgrade, backup, and recovery processes. Analyzes system performance and capacity, recommending improvements to optimize network operations.
  • Governance & Strategy Develops and maintains network policies, standards, and procedures. Contributes to long-term planning, including capacity planning, lifecycle management, and alignment with institutional IT strategies. Participates in governance of bodies, committees, and strategic initiatives.
  • Troubleshooting & Incident Leadership Leads the resolution of critical and complex network incidents. Coordinates response efforts across teams and ensures timely restoration of services. Implements strategies to prevent recurrence and improve system resilience.
  • Mentorship & Technical Leadership; Cross-Functional Collaboration Mentors and develop junior engineers, providing technical direction and oversight. Reviews work, offers guidance on best practices, and supports team capability development. Collaborates with systems, security, and application teams to ensure network solutions support broader infrastructure and application requirements. Other duties as assigned.


Qualifications / Licenses / Certifications

Graduation from an accredited institution with a bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or technology-related field, plus 3 years of experience; OR any combination of education and experience totaling 7 years.

Licenses or Certifications
Preferred VMware VCP or VCAP vSphere 6 or newer certification

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

Knowledge
  • Knowledge in Linux, MySQL, Apache, XML, Cisco IOS, and Arista OS.
  • Knowledge and experience with NXOS, Job Submission, Databases, Perl, Python, PowerShell, and other scripting languages.
  • Knowledge and experience with network component analyzers, scanners, testing tools and procedures for data circuits.
  • Knowledge and experience working in a customer service, team-oriented, collaborative environment.
Skills
  • Skills with scripting languages such as Python, Perl, Power-shell, or Bash.
  • Skills with the design, implementation, and maintenance of Active Directory, and/or LDAP directories.
  • Skills with various computer applications such as Arista CVAS, Cisco DNAC, Net-flows, Network Management Systems, PRTG, Packet Sniffers,
  • Solar Winds, DNS, DHCP, Syslog, SNMP, spreadsheets, database, internet tools, and performance monitoring tools.
  • Skills with TCP/IP, application network protocols, firewall management, operating system configuration, anti-virus software, and relational databases.
  • Skills with the installation, configuration, and maintenance of network hardware.
  • Skills with enterprise-level Wireless LAN and LAN, routers, hubs, switches, controllers, access points, radio frequencies, TCP/IP, IEEE 802.11 protocols, and electromagnetic interference.
  • Customer service skills.
  • Project management skills.
Abilities
  • Ability to exercise effective interpersonal, problem solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to read, write, and interpret technical documentation and procedures pertaining to network systems and application management.
