Job Summary:
A national leader in health care and life sciences, CU Anschutz is the only comprehensive academic health sciences center in Colorado and the largest in the Rocky Mountain region. Located in Aurora, Colorado, it is one of the newest education, research and patient care facilities in the world. With six schools and colleges, CU Anschutz trains the health sciences workforce of the future by blending education, research and clinical care all in one place. This strategic collaboration among diverse health care fields allows knowledge to travel directly from the research bench to the patient's bedside.
The Breast Surgical Oncology Fellowship prepares surgeons for careers in academic or private practice by providing comprehensive clinical, surgical, and research training. Fellows gain experience at CU Anschutz and affiliated hospitals under the guidance of dedicated faculty.
Key Fellowship Components:
- Perform general and disease-specific history and physical exams
- Counsel patients and obtain informed consent
- Manage surgical complications and complex clinical decision-making
By integrating clinical experience, operative training, and research, the fellowship ensures graduates are prepared for independent practice and leadership in Breast Surgical Oncology.
Work Location:
Clinical rotations will occur at the University of Colorado Hospital in Aurora, Colorado, UCHealth Cherry Creek Medical Center and Denver Health (optional) in Denver, CO, and UCHealth Highlands Ranch Hospital in Highlands Ranch, CO.
Why Join Us:
Mission: This fellowship aims to provide breast surgical oncology fellows with the education and skills needed to provide multidisciplinary care of breast disease with a focus on cancer. Upon completion of the program, the fellow will be proficient in the comprehensive management of breast cancer including a deep understanding of malignant disease biology, diagnosis, staging evaluations, treatment options, and expected response. While surgical management is often important, non-surgical cancer management is heavily emphasized in both potentially curative and palliative situations. In this regard, fellows are trained to provide care with confidence, evidence, and compassion. The concepts of survivorship, pain control, psychosocial support and honest discussion about end-of-life are all critical to the development of a breast surgical oncologist.
