JOB TITLE:
Lab Technician II
JOB PURPOSE:
The primary purpose of a WSVL Technician II is to contribute to workflow and functionality in veterinary diagnostic testing as appropriate for the given Wyoming State Veterinary Laboratory Bacteriology and Toxicology Sections. People in these positions have developing skills, limited roles in testing based on level of training and demonstration of proficiency and competency. Other roles include contributing to student employee supervision, limited client communication, and SOP development and updates.
This position has been deemed essential as addressed in the University of Wyoming's Employee Handbook. Employees in essential positions may be required to work during emergency closures and winter closures based on the nature of their job duties and the reasons for the closure.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Manage and direct daily operations of the bacteriology and toxicology laboratories.
- Manage multiple tasks; handle occasional deviations in sample quality; limited cross-training.
- Identify documentation and quality control issues.
- Provide day-to-day guidance to Tech 1s/students; "buddy" trainer for SOPs.
- Track and record inventory; alert lead when reagents are low; provide input on supply quality.
- Resolve routine instrument errors; identify sample discrepancies.
- Contact clinics for missing information.
- Send out testing when necessary.
- Provide basic test status updates and/or sample submission inquiries based on fee schedule.
- Daily exposure to hazards (BSL-2).
- Shipping isolates and other hazardous materials; training will be provided
- Operating specific equipment such as the MALDI-TOF instrument; training will be provided
SUPPLEMENTAL FUNCTIONS:
- Perform proficiency tests for bacteriology samples.
- Help develop new diagnostic methods.
COMPETENCIES:
- Proficiency and routine problem-solving, with some cross-training skills.
- Perform a broader range of tests independently.
- Resolve common instrument errors.
- Identify and resolve sample submission discrepancies by calling clients.
- Assist in training students/Tech 1s.
- Limited communication with clients regarding testing.
- Efficiency and ability to handle "routine" anomalies without constant supervision.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Bachelor's degree
Experience: 1 year work-related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- At least two years' experience with specimens/testing and client communication in a diagnostic laboratory.

On-campus: This position provides vital support to campus customers, and the successful candidate must be available to work on campus.
