Position Summary

The Community Engagement Coordinator is instrumental in the implementation of community engagement activities and coordinating Health On Wheels, a fleet of three mobile health units, in support of the mission of the School of Public Health and Health Professions (SPHHP) to improve the health of populations in the communities we serve. Working collaboratively with school leadership, departments, program directors, faculty, students, staff, alumni, and external partners, this position will be hands-on, balancing both administrative responsibilities and being involved in community engagement and health initiatives with diverse community members and groups.

The Community Engagement Coordinator will strengthen the relationships and visibility of the school through active service and engagement in the community that meets or exceeds practice expectations (i.e. community engagement accreditation requirements). From Health On Wheels, UB students and faculty in the health sciences will provide screenings, health education, and navigation for individuals in both urban and rural areas of Western New York. The Community Engagement Coordinator will be central to ensuring the smooth and effective delivery of services.

Responsibilities:

Assist with the planning, coordination, and evaluation of community outreach initiatives.
Coordinate activities with university partners (i.e. Office of Interprofessional Practice and Education), students, alumni and community members to enhance the visibility of the school's contribution to the community to both internal and external constituents.
Collaborate with the SPHHP Health On Wheels team on operational matters, including but not limited to scheduling, staffing, inventory management and compliance with university procedures.
Mobile health unit requirements: Drive to scheduled events; Set up and break down units at event sites; Maintain cleanliness of units and coordinate maintenance; Assist with unit detailing and upkeep; Support events during normal business hours, evenings, and weekends as needed.
Track and monitor data to evaluate effectiveness, inform future planning and support accreditation requirements for community engagement and service.
Support grant administration, including managing financial tracking and contributing to grant reporting requirements.
Supervise and train students, part-time staff, and volunteers in community engagement activities.
Maintain the highest level of professionalism and confidentiality in alignment with health standards.
Manage relationships with community partners, identify new partnership opportunities, and support ongoing collaboration efforts.
Perform additional duties as assigned to support community engagement and Health On Wheels operations.

To promote safe driving practices for the protection of the University Community, all those who drive University-owned vehicles are required to be included in the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) License Event Notification Service (LENS).

This position is defined as safety-sensitive, and as such, is subject pre employment and random alcohol and drug testing under the Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act of 1991.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree
Two years of professional experience in community outreach setting, or related health field
Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

Experience and comfort driving sprinter-type vans or similar vehicles
Ability to work flexible hours when needed for evening/weekend outreach events
Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal skills including the ability to understand, interpret, and apply policies and regulations and provide guidance and recommendations to others
Ability to communicate clearly and respectfully with diverse populations; maintain high level of cultural competency
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and proactively follow up on issues without direction
Excellent time management skills with the ability to maintain composure in a fast-paced environment
Must be an adept problem-solver who is able to independently manage competing demands and changing guidance under strict deadlines
Proficiency with the MS Office suite
A combination of education and experience will be considered in lieu of the requirement

Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree in a health related profession
Experience working with diverse communities
Project management experience
EMT or nursing background
Experience in higher education or research settings, working with faculty, staff, and students.
Multilingual (Spanish, Burmese, etc)

Physical Demands

Ability to transport materials weighing up to 75 lbs. Other physical requirements include moving, balancing, positioning self (e.g., stooping, twisting), and remaining in a stationary position on feet for extended periods.

Salary Range
$64,000 - $69,500

Special Instructions Summary

Applicants will be required to provide their driver's license information and create a Clearinghouse account to enable participation in the DMV's License Event Notification System (LENS) and Clearinghouse for Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.

The FMCDS Commercial Driver's License Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse is a secure online database that will allow the University at Buffalo to request access from applicants to identify drivers who commit drug and alcohol program violations.
