JOB TITLE:

Assistant Professor in Aquatic Ecosystem Ecology

JOB PURPOSE:

The Department of Zoology and Physiology at the University of Wyoming invites applications for a tenure-track position in Aquatic Ecosystem Ecology at the rank of Assistant Professor. We seek an innovative scientist who will establish an extramurally-funded research program addressing fundamental and/or applied questions in freshwater ecosystem ecology, and who will excel in a highly collaborative university setting through contributions to research, teaching, service, and outreach.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The successful candidate will be expected to develop a strong, extramurally funded research program focused on aquatic ecosystem ecology. We seek a colleague who is committed to participating in the community through teaching, research, service, and undergraduate and graduate student mentoring. The individual will be expected to contribute to the academic missions of the Department and the interdepartmental Ph.D. program in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. The successful candidate will also contribute to undergraduate and graduate education. Teaching responsibilities may include courses in aquatic ecology, ecosystem ecology, ecology, environmental science, quantitative ecology, or related areas, depending on the candidate's expertise and departmental needs. Candidates are expected to demonstrate a commitment to inclusive, evidence-based teaching and effective mentoring of students from diverse backgrounds.

SUPPLEMENTAL FUNCTIONS:

The candidate will be expected to participate in appropriate service activities including, but not limited to, serving on departmental, college, and university committees, and graduate committees. These service functions are in addition to discipline-related service activities at the national and international levels.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ph.D. in ecology, biology, aquatic science, environmental science, limnology, hydrology, or a closely related field by the time of appointment
  • Research expertise in ecosystem ecology, biogeochemistry, or a closely related field in freshwater systems
  • Evidence of scholarly productivity appropriate to the career stage


Experience Evaluation

Minimum experience requirements are evaluated on a full-time equivalent (FTE) basis. Relevant part-time experience will be prorated based on hours worked. For example, two years working an average of 20 hours per week is equivalent to approximately one year of full-time experience.

Applicants must include the average hours worked per week for all current and previous positions. Failure to provide this information may affect the evaluation of qualifications.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Multiple first author publications, including in high impact journals
  • Postdoctoral training in a related field
  • High potential to establish an independent, externally funded research program.
  • Experience integrating field-based research with quantitative, experimental, modeling, molecular, isotopic, or other complementary approaches.
  • Interest in interdisciplinary research addressing climate change, water resources, biodiversity, land-use change, or other pressing environmental challenges potentially with state and regional relevance.
  • High potential for excellence in undergraduate and graduate teaching and mentoring
  • Demonstrated capacity for effective teamwork or interest in collaboration.
  • Experience or interest in collaborating with natural-resource agencies, communities, Tribes, or other external partners.
