The Director of Academic and Career Counseling at Firelands College oversees the daily operations of the Academic and Career advising that happens at the college. This role also has a great impact on persistence, retention and graduate rates for the college.

Essential Functions


Administration and Leadership for Advising Unit

  • Develops, directs, and implements the strategic plan for the advising unit, aligned with College, Academic Affairs, and University strategic priorities related to academic and career advising, degree planning, and student success.
  • Directs, plans, supervises, and evaluates the work of Career and Academic Counselors, support staff, and faculty advisors who support the individual and group advising needs of BGSU Firelands students. Ensures the strategic use of technology and consistent implementation of College and University advising practices, including CSS/MyBGSU, Navigate, DARS, Canvas, Query, and other applicable systems.
  • Leads the advising unit's contribution to College student success, retention, persistence, and completion goals by utilizing advising best practices, current research, student data, and proactive outreach strategies. Provides training and support for faculty advisors and mentors.
  • Coordinates the day-to-day advising components of student orientation and registration programming, including materials, logistics, and staffing, in collaboration with appropriate College offices.
  • Participates in College-wide recruitment, enrollment, orientation, and student transition activities, including Falcon Days, Quick Enroll events, and other Firelands enrollment initiatives. May include occasional evenings and/or weekends.
  • Ensures the consistent production, collection, analysis, and reporting of data related to advising practices, student engagement, student progression and performance, advisor activity, and student success outcomes.
  • Serves as a point of contact for students experiencing academic problems, complaints, or complex academic situations and refers matters to the College Dean, Associate Dean, Assistant Vice Provost, or other appropriate University offices when necessary.
  • Assists in the development and maintenance of print and electronic information and resources for the advising unit, including web-based resources.
College Speci?c Responsibilities and Duties
  • Provides direct academic and career advising to undergraduate students in one or more of the College's degree programs.
  • Coordinates advising for special enrollment initiatives and student populations.
  • Supports the development, organization, coordination, implementation, and assessment of Student Orientation, Advising, and Registration programming in collaboration with Enrollment Management and other appropriate College offices.
  • Determines, verifies, and confirms graduation eligibility for Firelands College applicants through degree audits and required follow-up with students, advisors, academic programs, and University offices. This includes applicable College Credit Plus graduation initiatives and Finish What You Started.
  • Serves as liaison with department chairs, program directors and coordinators, departmental advisors, main-campus advisors, and support staff to ensure that academic program, curriculum, pathway, policy, and other changes affecting students are effectively communicated and incorporated into advising practices.
  • Represents Academic and Career Counseling at Academic Affairs and Academic Review Board meetings and coordinates ACC responsibilities associated with Academic Review Board processes.
  • Leads retention and persistence efforts across BGSU Firelands, including the use of student data and proactive advising strategies to identify students requiring outreach, support, re-engagement, or assistance progressing toward completion.
  • Provides direct advising and support for students with complex academic concerns involving University policies, procedures, rules, and regulations. Serves as a primary resource for academic service-related troubleshooting and exercises appropriate decision-making authority in resolving student issues.
  • Promotes the integration of academic planning and career exploration to help students understand the relationship among their educational goals, academic pathways, experiential opportunities, and future career direction
University Wide Leadership Related to Advising and Student Success
  • Represents Firelands College and the advising unit on appropriate University and College committees and workgroups, including the Senior Advising Council, Advising Commissions, Strategic Enrollment Group, Administrative Directors, and related groups.
  • Serves as a primary point of contact between appropriate University advising leadership and Firelands College faculty and advisors regarding Navigate and other advising initiatives.
  • As a member of the Senior Advising Council, participates in policy review, development and implementation of advising best practices, and College and University-wide advisor training and professional development.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications


The following Education is required:

  • Master's degree
The following Education is preferred:
  • Master's degree in College Student Personnel or related field
The following Experience is required:
  • 3 years of experience applying academic policy/procedure and advising in a university setting
  • 2 years supervisory experience
  • 2 full years of participating in the cyclical nature of activities/responsibilities of the Academic/Student Services Office

  • Familiarity with contemporary practices in academic advising and student success, including retention, persistence, and completion.
  • Proficiency in using student data and advising technology to support proactive advising, identify student needs, and inform decision-making.
  • Excellent written, oral, and presentation skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills for working effectively with students, faculty, staff, administrators, and other stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated leadership and collaboration skills within a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
  • Understanding of student support services and resources to facilitate effective and proactive student referrals.
