At Williams College, Campus Safety is built on trust, visibility, and genuine community support. As a non-sworn Campus Safety Services Officer, your job goes far beyond patrolling grounds: you are a primary first responder, a practical problem-solver, and a dependable resource for our students, faculty, and staff. If you enjoy hands-on community work where every day brings something new, we'd love to have you on our team.
Responsibilities:
Under the general supervision of a Campus Safety Supervisor:
- Proactively patrol campus grounds, academic facilities, and multi-story residential halls via foot, vehicle, or bicycle. Maintain high visibility to foster community trust, mitigate safety hazards, and cultivate strong relationships across campus.

- Apply empathetic, trauma-informed, and culturally competent communication to resolve interpersonal disputes, support students in distress, and de-escalate complex situations.
- Approach all interactions with the campus community with a strong focus on customer service.
- Encourage compliance with college policies through engagement, fair treatment, and education rather than punitive enforcement, supporting an inclusive living-learning environment.
- Conduct preliminary inquiries into incidents, gathering facts with objectivity and discretion. Utilize Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD) systems and report-writing software to generate timely, accurate incident logs.
- Support central dispatch operations, execute emergency notifications, and contribute to the hands-on onboarding and training of new team members as needed.
Requirements:
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
- Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.

- Must be able to maintain confidentiality.
- Ability to handle emergency situations with excellent judgment and discretion.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including computer proficiency and the ability to learn and adapt to new technology or software.
- Cultural competency and sensitivity, including the ability to maintain effective working relationships with a broad spectrum of individuals from a variety of diverse backgrounds.
- Possesses strong people skills, patience, and a willingness to assist others, with a perceptive and empathetic approach.
Preferred Experience & Key Competencies:
- Demonstrated ability to build authentic, respectful relationships with individuals from broad and intersecting backgrounds.
- Outstanding verbal and written communication skills, grounded in active listening, patience, emotional intelligence, and discretion.
- Strong critical thinking skills with the ability to maintain composure, exercise excellent judgment, and make sound decisions in fast-moving crisis situations.
- Proficiency with computers, mobile technology, database management, and electronic reporting tools.
- Prior experience in community service, non-sworn security, higher education, customer service, or emergency response is preferred but not required; comprehensive departmental training will be provided.
