This position is a full-time, 12 month, non-tenure track clinical faculty position with a projected start date of July 1, 2027, and an expectation of opening the clinic for enrollment for the fall 2028 semester.

The tax clinic will be a signature program of Boston University School of Law, providing students in our JD and Tax LLM programs with the opportunity to work with and represent low-income clients in individual or small business disputes involving state and federal taxes. As the founding director, the incumbent will be responsible for determining and developing the structure, scope, and direction of the clinic in collaboration with the Associate Dean for Experiential Education and the Assistant Dean for Graduate, International, and Online Programs.

The Director of the Tax Clinic will be responsible for teaching the seminar and fieldwork components of the clinic, as well as coordination of all aspects of the operation and development of the clinic.

The primary responsibilities include:

  • During Academic year 2027-2028, defining the scope, designing the structure and curriculum and launch of a tax clinic that includes at least one clinic seminar and one clinic fieldwork course per semester in time for the clinical and experiential programs application for AY 28-29;
  • Developing policies and procedures for the clinic, including a conflict check system;
  • Teaching a doctrinal, simulation, or practicum course in tax law during the fall 2027 and spring 2028 semesters and run a VITA site during the spring 2028 semester (to account for the lack of a clinical teaching load during the first year);
  • Beginning Fall 2028, and continuing, teaching at least one clinic seminar and one clinic fieldwork course per semester, and serving as instructor of record for any other tax clinic courses;
  • Continually reviewing, innovating, and refining the curriculum for the clinic;
  • Supervising students in the clinic;
  • Recruiting and hiring part-time faculty to teach in the clinic, as needed;
  • Maintaining and developing relationships with organizations in Boston, including local non-profit organizations that can direct potential clients to the BU Law Tax Clinic for legal services;
  • Providing substantial assistance, comprised of pedagogical, syllabus development, and other advice to any additional tax clinic instructors, including part-time faculty;
  • Coordinating with the Associate Dean for Experiential Learning, the Vice Dean of Faculty, and the Registrar's Office to assemble and publish the Clinic's curriculum as part of the School of Law's overall course offerings;
  • Ensuring that all seminars and fieldwork courses are taught in accordance with BU Law's outcomes, current ABA Standards, and best practices; and
  • Participating in the life of the law school by serving on committees and attending regular experiential and full faculty meetings and events.
