The Foothill-De Anza Community College District is currently accepting applications for the faculty position of Instructor, Access Technology Specialist, De Anza College. The High Tech Center Training Unit is a grant program funded by the CCC Chancellor's Office to provide expertise and professional development training in the areas of assistive technology, alternate formats, and web accessibility.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POSITION INCLUDE:
Under the direction of the director of the High Tech Center Training Unit (HTCTU), the Training Specialist/Instructor provides instruction, technical assistance, training, and resource materials to faculty and staff of California Community Colleges and other participating institutions in the areas of alternate media and assistive/instructional computer technologies with an emphasis on access technologies for students with learning disabilities, visual disabilities, physical disabilities, or those who are deaf or hard of hearing. Design, develop and deliver training for faculty and staff of California Community Colleges in the use of alternate media and assistive/instructional computer technology primarily for Windows and Macintosh computers and mobile devices. Develop training and course materials for instructing alternate media and assistive computer technologies in community college programs as they apply to the needs of students with disabilities. Work closely with DSPS faculty and staff statewide to facilitate the exchange of information and ideas. Provide technical assistance, consultation, and training. Travel to provide off-site trainings and program reviews as requested. Act as a resource for technical assistance and support regarding the creation of alternate media and use of assistive/instructional computer technologies. Evaluate and review innovative methods and practices of potential benefit to students with disabilities as well as emerging assistive and instructional computer technologies. Work closely with and provide oversight to the HTCTU network technician/IT staff to develop and maintain the HTCTU training lab, including installing, configuring, and troubleshooting assistive computer technology. Provide direction to network technician/IT staff as required.

Standard duties expected of all faculty include development and evaluation of curricula, maintaining scheduled office hours, attending department and division meetings, pursuing professional growth activities, and performing other duties consistent with the role of an instructor. Instructors also have the opportunity to serve on district and college committees and participate in campus extra-curricular activities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Understanding of, sensitivity to, and respect for the diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds, disability, and sexual orientation of community college students, faculty and staff.
  2. A bachelor's degree with any of the following majors: education of students with specific or multiple disabilities; special education; psychology; physical education with an emphasis in adaptive physical education; communicative disorders; rehabilitation; computer-based education; computer science; computer layout and design; other computer-related majors which include course work on adapted or assistive computer technology for students with disabilities; other majors related to providing specialized instruction or services to persons with disabilities, OR

an Associate degree with one for the majors specified in subparagraph above AND four (4) years of experience providing specialized instruction or services to persons in the disability category or categories being served.

NOTE: Official Transcripts verifying qualifications will be REQUIRED prior to an offer of employment. Applicants who have international transcripts must obtain transcripts that are evaluated by an independent educational-equivalency evaluation company and obtain an English translation (if necessary). These services are to be done at the applicant's expense. Both Foothill De Anza CCD employees and external candidates must submit transcripts.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Master's degree in computer science, computer graphics, access/rehab technology, special education, education, or a related field.
  2. Experience using assistive computer technology and Web-based instructional resources for teaching and learning.
  3. Experience with the creation and use of alternate media formats.
  4. Familiarity with state and national laws, standards, and guidelines that apply to the California Community Colleges with regard to equal access to technology and the provision of academic materials in alternate format for students and staff with disabilities.
  5. Experience with the use of assistive computer technologies for students who are blind, low vision, deaf and hard of hearing, physically disabled, and/or learning disabled.
  6. Experience using instructional technology to design and develop training materials in a variety of delivery modes, preferably in an educational environment.

In addition, successful candidates will demonstrate the following:

  1. Knowledge of the creation and conversion of alternate formats including e-text, braille, DAISY, braille, and tactile graphics.
  2. Knowledge of effective uses of a variety of assistive computer technologies such as screen readers for the blind, braille translation software, refreshable braille displays, large print display systems, speech recognition systems, as well as writing and productivity tools for students with learning disabilities.
  3. Understanding of Windows and Macintosh operating systems and cross-platform issues of application software.
  4. Knowledge of adult learning theory and assessment methods.
  5. Ability to develop and assess educational programs.
  6. Experience in instructional design and training development.
  7. Familiarity with academic issues relevant to community college student populations.
  8. Ability to work in a changing environment and manage multiple priorities.

  5. Stamina sufficient to present for extended periods of time.
  6. Ability to travel for extended periods by car and airplane to site visits and conferences.

Travel Requirements:
Overnight travel is required in this position up to one-fourth of the academic year. Such travel may be one night or multiple nights. Although attempts will be made to restrict travel to the work week, comp time will be provided when travel extends over weekends. The following travel is standard and expected for this position:

  1. Travel within California to any of the 112+ California community colleges, as well as to the CCC Chancellor's Office, campuses outside the CCC system, and other presentation sites.
  2. Travel within the United States for conference attendance and presentations (up to 10% of work time).
