The Office of Financial Aid at Eastern Washington University, invites applicants for their Financial Wellness Program, Program Specialist 2 - Project position. This position is responsible for assisting in the development and operations of EWU's Financial Wellness Program (FWP). This includes implementation of program goals, short- and long-term planning and reports to the Assistant Director for Customer Service and Outreach.

This position is 100% grant-funded The role of this position is to:
  • Provide counseling and coaching to students, parents, faculty, high school counselors and others regarding financial aid eligibility, application procedures, satisfactory academic progress requirements, student budget development, and debt management.
  • Serve as a campus partner resource for the Student Success Collaborative.
  • Review files, awards aid, and makes informed and well-documented professional judgment decisions.
  • Deliver financial aid and financial wellness presentations and support community outreach efforts with campus partners, including a special focus on at risk populations.
  • Complete assigned special projects and/or program responsibilities based on operational necessity and individual experience and skills.

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelors degree and minimum two (2) years peer-to-peer mentoring, coaching, or other mentorship program related experience; OR
    • A minimum of five years peer-to-peer mentoring, coaching, or other mentorship program related experience.


  • Analytical and critical thinking skills to manage complex tasks in adherence to federal and state regulations.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Superior interpersonal skills including demonstrated ability to apply a culturally responsive and flexible approach that is sensitive to the needs of the students
  • Must pass the requirements to access all Federal and state aid related administration systems.
  • Candidates must demonstrate interest, ability and/or experience promoting cultural competency, universal accessibility, or diversity.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with peer mentoring or coaching programming.
  • Experience with financial wellness/literacy/education programming and/or financial aid.
  • Financial Wellness professional certification, such as the Accredited Financial Counselor certificate through AFCPE
  • Masters Degree
  • Experience working with Banner.
  • Experience working in a fast paced, high demand environment.
  • Experience in problem resolution and customer de-escalation.

Job Duties:
% of Time: 50
Responsibility / Duty: FINANCIAL WELLNESS PROGRAM (50%)
  1. Manage the university-wide Financial Wellness Program (FWP), a peer-to-peer coaching program as a part of the EWU Title III project, including supervision of student personnel, conducting coaching sessions, cross-training team members, and coordinating team support of program
  2. Ensure strong collaboration with campus partners
  3. Supervise Graduate Student Assistants and other student employees, providing ongoing mentorship, guidance and training.
  4. Contribute to the creation and management of curriculum and ongoing peer coach training.
  5. Manage a credit-based, experiential learning, internship program in partnership with Career Center and select academic departments.
  6. Other related duties as assigned.

Responsibility / Duty: FINANCIAL AID COUNSELING AND COACHING (30%)
  1. Provide one-on-one counseling in person, through e-mail and over the phone to applicants, students, parents and other community members. Areas of counseling include the financial aid application process and eligibility, scholarship processes and eligibility, satisfactory academic progress, budget development, debt management, and University policies and procedures.
  2. Provide guidance on resolving problems by explaining complex and detailed financial aid information in terms parents and students can more easily understand, and serve as liaison to other various campus and community partners.
  3. Meet and collaborate with others to resolve issues pertaining to student eligibility and awarding of financial aid. Participates in complex Customer Service Team decisions, policy development, and problem resolution.
  4. Serve in the Student Success Collaborative of coordinated campus services, including emergency aid.
  5. Follows documented policies and procedures to ensure responsive and successful customer service.
  6. Other related duties as assigned.

Responsibility / Duty: FINANCIAL AID EVALUATION, PACKAGING AND PROFESSIONAL JUDGMENT (20%)
  1. Manage a portion of financial aid applications; determines if and what additional information may be required, makes corrections, and revises financial aid awards to ensure compliance with federal, state and institutional policies.
  2. Use analytical and mathematical skills to evaluate numerical information presented on tax documents, student aid application records, and aid eligibility worksheets.
  3. Use professional judgment to accommodate and counsel students or parents regarding special circumstances.
  4. Make appropriate revisions to student eligibility, cost of attendance or financial aid within regulations.
  5. Review complex family financial information and situations and apply sound judgment to arrive at defensible decisions which are well documented and will withstand review by audit.
  6. Attend training opportunities in order to stay abreast of changing regulations, adherence to regulations, and enhance service to students.
  7. Stay current and compliant with federal, state and institutional financial aid regulations, policies and procedures governing the financial aid process, and maintain a working knowledge of federal, state and institutional sources of student financial aid.
  8. Develop and maintain a portion of program policies and procedures.
  9. Other related duties as assigned.

Conditions of Employment:
This is a 100% classified position funded under the EWUs SIP Title III grant. Continuation of the position is availability of the grant and unit funding.

This position, during the course of university employment will be involved in the receipt of, or accountability for, university funds or other items of value, as well as the unsupervised access with the developmentally disabled, vulnerable adults or children under the age of 16. The offer of employment is contingent upon successful completion and passing of a background check prior to beginning employment.

All new employees must comply with EWU Immunization Policy 602-02 and provide proof of immunity or vaccination to MMR and proof they are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 before beginning work at EWU. Salary Information: The salary range for this position is $41,616 (minimum) up to $54,180. Where the hired candidate will begin within this range is dependent on education, experience and skills.
